Winter weather advisory in Alaska: Snowstorm threatens travel with 9 inches falling. Should you travel?

The early season storm is set to deliver moderate to heavy snow across interior Alaska, raising the risk of hazardous travel conditions.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory for portions of Northern Alaska, with forecasts predicting up to 9 inches of snowfall between Thursday afternoon and Friday evening. Multiple states across the US had been issued advisories for wintry weather by the NWS as of early Thursday, including much of the Northeast as well as Alaska and Colorado. The advisory comes as Alaska begins to transition into the colder months, making preparedness especially crucial for local communities and travelers on major routes.The National Weather Service forecast office, Fairbanks, Alaska said on X, Tuesday: “Moderate to heavy snowfall is expected for the White Mountains, with the highest amounts reaching the Steese and Eagle Summits and Upper Chatanika Valley Thursday evening into Friday night. Mixed precipitation is expected at lower elevations.”NWS Burlington, Vermont, said on X, Wednesday: “A freeze warning and frost advisory is in effect for parts of the region tonight. The agency predicts snow accumulations between 4 and 9 inches, with higher elevations receiving the most snow.Areas most affected include the Steese Highway up to mile marker 90 and the elevated portions of the White Mountains. The snowfall is expected to begin with a weaker weather system Wednesday night, intensifying as the main storm moves in Thursday night through Friday morning. The coming storm is anticipated to have significant travel impacts, particularly during the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes.“Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes,” the NWS said in its advisory issued at 4:44 a.m. Wednesday. Motorists are urged to slow down, use extra caution, and check current road conditions by calling 511. The NWS office in Fairbanks shared images of the snow, which measured at 1.2 inches, on social media.“According to record, the Fairbanks area typically gets their first inch of snow on October 9th, so we are about two weeks ahead of schedule,” NWS Fairbanks posted on X. “This snow is unlikely to stick around, but keep an eye on the horizon as winter is coming!”On the other hand, freeze warnings are in effect across parts of New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire, with temperatures expected to drop into the upper 20s and low 30s. The warnings remain active until Thursday morning, according to current reports. “Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the NWS cautioned.ALSO READ: Joshua Allen’s heartbreaking last Instagram post goes viral as family breaks silence on his tragic deathAdditionally, frost advisories had been issued for parts of northern and central Pennsylvania, southern Maine, western Massachusetts, and the central and southern San Luis Valley in Colorado, where the NWS said temperatures in the 30s could result in frost formation that posed a risk to outdoor vegetation.Mark Pellerito, with the NWS Binghamton, New York, forecast office, told Newsweek on Wednesday: “Thursday night will still be quite chilly, with some lower to mid-30s in the coldest locations [in NWS Binghamton’s forecast area]. It would be reasonable to anticipate that many of the current freeze warning counties could end up with at least a frost advisory for Thursday night.”After Thursday night, we will be in a warmer spell and so no frost/freeze conditions through the weekend through at least the middle of next week.
