The Met Office has extended its Amber warning for Storm Amy through Saturday as wind speeds and potential impacts rise across the Highlands and Islands.
Yellow warnings for wind and rain remain in place, highlighting the risk of dangerous conditions, travel disruption, and localised flooding. A new warning is expected to cover Saturday.
Forecasters warn that Storm Amy will bring a spell of “damaging” winds, starting in western areas on Friday evening before gradually moving northeast overnight.
The Amber warning for much of the Highlands and Western Isles signals a risk to life from flying debris and potential damage to buildings. Gusts of 60–70mph are expected widely, with 70–80mph in exposed areas and up to 100mph in parts of western Lochaber, Skye, and Tiree this evening.
These conditions may cause power outages, affect mobile coverage, and disrupt travel, with road, rail, ferry, and air services potentially delayed or cancelled. The warning has been updated as wind speeds and likely impacts have increased, with a further warning expected Saturday morning.
A wider yellow wind warning covers much of the northern and western Highlands and the Northern Isles. Residents are advised to secure loose items, prepare for power cuts, and avoid unnecessary travel, while coastal areas should remain cautious due to large waves and flooding.
Meanwhile, a yellow rain warning remains in place from Friday afternoon into Saturday. A band of heavy rain will sweep northeast on Friday, followed by frequent showers and longer spells from the west on Saturday. Rainfall of 40–60mm is expected on hills, with totals exceeding 70mm across Highland mountains. Saturated ground increases the risk of localised flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.
Authorities urge residents to take precautions, including securing property, preparing for power cuts, and allowing extra time for travel. Coastal areas should stay clear of sea fronts and cliffs, and emergency services should be contacted if needed, with 999 available and the Coastguard for coastal incidents.
