Wind gusts up to 60 mph could cause power outages in Upstate NY today

Syracuse, N.Y. -- A storm system could bring damaging winds and rain to Upstate New York today, the National Weather Service said. Wind gusts could hit 60 mph this evening, especially in the Mohawk Valley, Capital Region and Catskills. A high wind warning is in effect for those regions. “Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines,” the warning said. “Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.” The warning is in effect from 7 tonight until 7 a.m. Thursday. The strongest winds are expected from 7 to 10 p.m. as a cold front sweeps across the state. A lesser high wind advisory is in effect for the rest of the state, which could see gusts of 40 mph or more. The system will also bring a quarter-inch of rain for much of Upstate, with higher amounts in the Adirondacks and the North Country.
