Sometimes news breaks and those of us bravely toiling at the journalistic coalface are left scrambling, requiring an urgent huddle. Prepare the keyboards! We must ride forth! And so it was this week when a major development arrived and photos hit the agencies of Prince William in Brazil. He got hot. Well, at least dishier than he has looked since Nokia Snake was the in thing. There the next King was in Rio de Janeiro, grey peppering his rugged (let’s be honest, Harry-esque) beard, as he leapt about playing beach volleyball on the famed stretches of Copacabana, becoming the first heir to the throne to take his shoes off in public since Edward III de-slippered before the Battle of Crécy. Somehow, at some point of late, while Westminster, 65 millions Brits and Fleet Street was focused on Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor as he burrowed away in his plush, grande dame, silk-wallpapered-ed, hidey-hole Royal Lodge over the latest round of revelations about his great pal Jeffrey Epstein, William has been up to something. Maybe the prince has had a secret gym installed in an outbuilding at Adelaide Cottage, the Prince and Princess of Wales’ former home (they have just upgraded to the more regal Forest Lodge) for early morning Arnie sessions or maybe there is an oil painting withering in the Windsor Castle attic, Dorian Grey-style. Whatever the ‘how’, the results were on display on Wednesday when William landed in South America and the internet let out a ‘phwoar’. It was a shock harkening back to the brief, glorious window, post-Eton and pre-Mr Sensible Air Ambulance Pilot when the prince was a right proper pin-up and the focus of no end of giggy crushes. Picture: Aaron Chown-Pool/Getty Images First up in Rio, the 43-year-old was handed the keys to the city before promptly haring off to give us unbuttoned-linen-shirt Wills who is dead keen on saving the Amazon. Then there was some beach volleyball and him enthusiastically blowing a lifesaver’s whistle and taking part in a soccer kick about where he heart-meltingly hugged small children. Picture: Aaron Chown-Pool/Getty Images What was clear as the photos of the prince in Captain Planet mode started doing the rounds was that Daggy Dad William who we’ve come to know over the last 15 or so years, a man who owned an unfortunate number of the sort of navy jumpers perfect for casual Friday at a regional accounting firm, was a goner. Prince William visits Copacabana beach. Picture: Dhavid Normando/Getty Images The years, and his commitment to shopping out of the Marks and Spencer catalogue, have not been kind to our formerly fair (and haired) prince. Anyone much younger than William’s own age might not know it but there was a good stretch there, in the late 90s and early 2000s, where he was plastered on teenage bedroom walls as ‘Willsmania’ took global grip. There was also a game of volleyball with players from the Levante Institute. Picture: Chris Jackson/Getty Images It was to be but a brief interlude and by the time he was settling down with that nice girl Kate, he looked like a man suffering a serious case of premature middle age; like someone who fretted about his fibre intake and perpetually kept his socks on. Looking every inch the family man in 2013 in Holyhead, Wales. Picture: Paul Lewis – WPA Pool/Getty Images He was, in short, a dag. He had no style, dressed like a man decades older and had all the cool and sangfroid of a burnt out bar fridge. By the time he was 30 he had morphed into a serious, po-faced family man and left the young person hijinx-ing and fun-having to Prince Harry whose security team seemed to spend their lives bodily retrieving him from Mayfair boîtes (Does sir need a kebab?). The two brothers neatly conformed to stereotypes, the sensible older one who was all duty and 100 per cent wool trousers and the laddish, good-time, charisma-rama younger one. I have no idea how, when or where but as of today, the brothers have switched. As 2025 comes to close Prince William has returned to right honourable dish territory while the Duke of Sussex now spends a lot of time looking rudderless in contempo casual blazers. Last week he and his wife Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex went to the baseball world series in Los Angeles and he gave off a general listless, uneasy vibe, like a Malibu dentist wondering if a midlife Porsche purchase might fix everything. Picture: Ronald Martinez/Getty Images And therein might lie William’s makeover secret – not creatine or protein-maxxing or letting Kate buy his trousers but he has one thing Harry does not: Purpose. William was in Rio for the fifth outing of his Earthshot Prize, having now handed out nearly $50 million towards dozens of innovative, exciting solutions to the climate crisis. He’s found his cause, his chequebook and his raison d’etre and looks like he’s having a brilliant time of it. Picture: AFP Sadly the same can’t be said of Harry who is better defined these days by what he isn’t: A successful TV producer, a podcaster, deep-pocketed roving international philanthropist, and on great terms with his family or homeland. What does he do all day? Meghan has her jam-pire or at least is having a crack at the building of and has highly successfully returned to her Instagram roots. In a particularly acute case of ‘what were you thinking?’ at the same time that William and his velvet dinner jacket were in Brazil playing Mr Global Statesman, hosting British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, energy secretary Ed Miliband, and Dame Jacinda Ardern, Harry was in Toronto staging his own manoeuvres. Ahead of this weekend’s Remembrance Day, the duke flew to Canada to meet local army units and to attend a private lunch held by the military charity called True Patriot Love. No one can or ever should question Harry’s commitment to the services or veterans but as far as the calibre of these duelling outings go, he was always going to come off worse. More Coverage ‘No apology’: Harry issues defiant message William, Kate’s major win: ‘Grossly intrusive’ While Harry was being asked ‘chicken or fish?’ William was on his way to the Cop30 climate power klatsch in the city of Belem, to rub shoulders and UN briefing notes with various world leaders. If there is an upside for Harry here it’s that William has just proven to all of us that it’s never too late – never too late to find your groove or to find something that makes you truly happy or to have a crack at saving the Amazon.
