Wide welcome for UK, Australia, Canada, and Portugal’s recognition of Palestinian State

Arab and Islamic countries have welcomed United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Portugal’s official recognition of the State of Palestine as “a historic move and a triumph” for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

The move is seen by many states as a sign of “growing international consensus” on the need to end occupation and implement the two-state solution in accordance with international legitimacy.

Qatari foreign Ministry said that the recognitions contribute to advancing prospects for a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in the region calling for other countries around the world to take similar steps that reflect a commitment to international law.

The ministry reiterated Qatar’s “unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and the right of the Palestinian people to establish an independent state” along the 1967 borders.

Saudi Arabia also welcomed the move, describing it as a reflection of the friendly countries’ commitment to supporting the peace process based on the two-state solution.

The Kingdom hoped that more nations would follow suit, enabling the Palestinian people to attain their legitimate rights.

Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs considered the international recognition of Palestine “a significant and positive shift” that contributes to restoring balance to the peace process, emphasizing that this step is a fundamental factor in empowering the Palestinian people to establish their independent state.

Jordan affirmed that the new stance taken by these countries aligns with the international will to end the occupation and uphold the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to establish their state along the June 4, 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Oman also described the recognition of Palestinian state as a “highly important development” in the context of international efforts to achieve the two-state solution and reinforce peace and security in the region.

The Muslim World League praised the recognition as a translation of the principles of justice and the historical and legal rights of the Palestinian people.

GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, called the move a “historic milestone” toward achieving justice and international legitimacy. He reiterated the call for other nations to recognize the State of Palestine in support of the two-state solution.
