Why Was Dublin Airport Terminal 2 Evacuated And Is It Operational Now?

Dublin Airport witnessed a tense afternoon on Saturday after Terminal 2 was evacuated when Gardaí received reports of a suspicious piece of luggage. Authorities moved swiftly to clear the terminal, describing the action as a “precautionary measure” aimed at ensuring passenger safety. The Irish Army’s explosive ordnance disposal unit was called in to assist Gardaí with the examination of the item. After a preliminary inspection, officials confirmed the luggage was contained and moved to a secure location away from the terminal. In a statement, Gardaí said, “Following a preliminary examination on scene, the piece of luggage was contained and deemed safe for removal from T2 to an alternate location which would not impact on airport operations.” Luggage Deemed Safe, Operations Resume Subsequent checks by army experts determined that the luggage posed no threat. The item has since been declared safe, and normal operations resumed at the airport later in the evening. Police emphasised that enquiries are ongoing but defended the decision to evacuate, calling it an “appropriate and responsible approach” given the information available at the time. Airport officials confirmed that although Terminal 2 reopened quickly, passengers should expect residual delays through the evening. Airlines are adjusting schedules to minimise the disruption, though some knock- on effects are likely for connecting flights. Separate Software Issue Adds to Delays The incident coincided with a Europe-wide airport software issue that has caused minor operational difficulties at Dublin and Cork airports. Officials said the glitch was unrelated to the security alert but has added to travel disruptions. Passengers have been advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates and to allow extra time for travel. Authorities reassured the public that all necessary safety protocols had been followed and that passenger security remained their foremost priority.
