As the holiday season approaches, shopping local takes on renewed significance, offering a myriad of benefits that extend beyond mere convenience. This year, Black Press Media has launched an eight-ad campaign to emphasize the importance of supporting local businesses during the festive season. The initiative aims to keep holiday dollars circulating within the local economy while providing practical reasons for choosing local stores over out-of-town big-box retailers. Central to these efforts is the Fort St. James Chamber of Commerce’s distribution of Fort St. James Bucks through local festive competitions, encouraging residents to invest in their community. The annual Santa Parade, a beloved event, not only attracts crowds to the downtown area but also fosters a sense of community spirit. Local businesses participate enthusiastically, competing for festive prizes and showcasing the vibrant offerings available right at home. With the tagline, “Let’s do business,” the Fort St. James Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to connecting business owners with essential resources and community support. They actively seek new directors from various community sectors to ensure their continued growth and representation. This collaborative approach strengthens the local economy, creating a robust environment for both established and emerging businesses. Leanne Laraway, owner of The Window Box Flowers & More, shares her positive experiences of community support during the holiday season. Her store, a staple in Fort St. James for 13 years, offers a wide range of products, from fresh flowers to unique gifts. Laraway notes, “When businesses in town are thriving, someone might have the confidence to take a chance and start something new that’s missing.” She emphasizes that every dollar spent locally makes a noticeable impact, contributing to a vibrant local economy. Collaboration among local businesses is crucial, especially in a small community with limited resources. This spirit of cooperation is evident in the partnership between Anja’s Motel & Meals and Meadow View Lodge, which recently joined forces to ensure all their guests enjoyed hearty meals. Melodi Eitzen, owner of Meadow View Lodge, highlights the reciprocal nature of local support. “When guests stay with us and support us as a local business, we, in turn, use that revenue to improve our facilities and also spend on our family,” she explains. Eitzen shared a heartwarming social media post about a logging fleet that chose their lodge, underscoring the community’s interconnectedness. Eitzen adds, “Our revenue also goes into other local businesses and programs in Fort St. James. It’s a cycle. We constantly give back to and support our community, which we love.” This cyclical flow of support ensures that local businesses thrive, thereby enriching the community as a whole. Shopping locally during the holidays is more than just a choice; it’s an investment in the community’s future. By supporting local businesses, residents help to create jobs, foster entrepreneurship, and maintain the unique character of Fort St. James. This holiday season, consider the lasting impact of your purchases and join the movement to support local businesses. Your support not only enriches your own holiday experience but also strengthens the community fabric for years to come.
