Why She Was 'So Afraid'

Emma Stone’s latest role in Bugonia (a remake of the Korean movie directed by Jang Joon-Hwan titled Save the Green Planet!) required the actress to shave her head, and she reveals why she was "so afraid". In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Stone addressed her concerns about her bold transformation as the CEO of a pharmaceutical company, Michell Fuller. Stone stated that she "was meditating on stay still, just stay still." She was "so afraid" to mess up the moment. Stone also added that "it was one take and there were four cameras set up just to make sure." Bugonia was released on October 31 and is a comedy sci-fi starring Stone alongside Jesse Plemons as Teddy, Stavros Halkias as Casey, Aidan Delbis as Don, and Alicia Silverstone as Sandy. It follows two conspiracy-crazed men as they kidnap a CEO when they become convinced she’s an alien sent to destroy Earth. The movie was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, who has collaborated with Stone on several projects, including Poor Things, The Favorite, and Kinds of Kindness. Lanthimos spoke of Stone’s dedication and stated it wasn’t difficult at all to convince the actress to shave her hair off. He continued and said: "She read it [the script] first, and she had the slightest hesitation just before, not hesitation to do it, but she had kind of a knot in her stomach. But it happened. Thankfully, we did it. We only had one shot to achieve it. And then she felt great. She saw herself, and she really loved it, and she felt very free." Stone didn’t only shave her head for the role, but Plemons’ character, Teddy, believed that they needed to apply thick layers of lotion all over her body regularly to dull her alien powers. Stone further explained the process and said that human skin has a temperature of around 98.6 degrees, which is "a melting point for a lot of creams". This required tests and a combination of attempts to allow the cream to stay.
