Ronda Rousey backed herself to do what Brock Lesnar couldn’t. The former UFC women’s bantamweight champion is not one to shy away from making controversial comments that raise plenty of eyebrows. Just recently, Rousey took aim at Joe Rogan and MMA fans during an appearance on Bert Kreischer’s YouTube podcast, insisting that the UFC color commentator is not an “expert” and accusing fans of withdrawing their support for fighters after a loss. It hasn’t just been Rousey’s career post-UFC that has featured remarks widely described as questionable. And one regarding her chances against arguably the promotion’s best-ever heavyweight drew particular backlash. After Rousey beat Liz Carmouche at UFC 157 in the very first women’s fight in the promotion, she was scheduled to defend her title again in December against Miesha Tate. The month before, she was interviewed by the Spanish-language daily Hoy newspaper and shocked fans with her response when asked if she could beat then-reigning UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez. “In any given moment, under the right circumstance, I think it is possible,” Rousey said of beating Velasquez. “You cannot tell me that it is physically impossible. It is possible that in any given moment that I could beat him. “I simply believe in my possibilities,” she added. Ronda Rousey liked her chances against Floyd Mayweather in a ‘no-rules fight’ Velasquez was not the only fantasy opponent against whom the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist in judo fancied her chances. Rousey also addressed a fight with Floyd Mayweather, an all-time boxing great who retired with a perfect 50-0 record. While the ex-UFC star would, of course, give ‘Money’ a firm edge in a traditional boxing match, she did claim in 2015 that Mayweather would be in trouble if they met in a “no-rules fight.” “Floyd is one of the best boxers of all time,” Rousey wrote during a Reddit Ask Me Anything session. “He would definitely beat me in a boxing match. I unfortunately don’t get into ‘matches.’ I fight for a living. “In a no-rules fight, I believe I can beat anyone on this planet,” she continued. “Boxing is a sweet science with strict rules that I respect very much and aspire every day to improve at. “But you said ruleless fight, and that’s my honest answer.”
