Why prosecutors say a Macomb County businessman was targeted for murder

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – Prosecutors have revealed what they believe is the motive for the attempted murder of a Macomb County businessman. Eddie Jawad was targeted outside his mansion on Oct. 14 and was shot as he drove his SUV outside his garage. He was grazed in his right leg and struck in his left leg, and also suffered injuries from broken glass. He was released from the hospital later that same day. Authorities revealed that two of the three people charged in the crime used to work for Jawad. They believe the shooting was an attempt to cover up thousands of dollars embezzled from him. He was charged as a habitual offender and his bond was set at $1,000,000. Rachard Huffman, 39, was charged with conspiracy to commit homicide and conspiracy to commit embezzlement. His bond was set at $1,000,000. Dawn Huffman, 44, was charged with embezzlement of $100,000 and conspiracy to commit embezzlement. Her bond was set at $500,000. According to authorities, Dawn Huffman -- Rachard’s wife -- worked as the office manager for Jawad’s business and handled a credit card intended to be used to pay utilities at multiple properties of Jawad’s. Prosecutors claim she used the card to embezzle more than $100,000. They further claim that Rachard Huffman and Martin conspired to kill Jawad to prevent him from pursuing the embezzlement. Martin is accused of hiding under a car in the driveway before opening fire on Jawad while he was leaving. Rachard Huffman reportedly worked for Jawad Investments from August 2023 to August 2025 and Dawn Huffman was employed in the company for more than 22 years. Martin returns to court for a preliminary exam on Nov. 24, while both Huffmans will return to court for their probable cause conferences on Nov. 17.
