Why Paramjit Singh, US Resident For 30 Years, Green Card Holder, Was Detained Over Decades-Old Pay Phone Case?

Indiana: Paramjit Singh, an Indian-origin green card holder who has lived in the United States for the past 30 years and runs a business, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over a month ago upon returning from India. Singh, who owns a business in Fort Wayne, Indiana, was held at Chicago O’Hare Airport on July 30. According to Newsweek, Singh’s attorney stated that the detention was unlawful, noting that his client suffers from a serious health condition and that the government is endangering his well-being by continuing to hold him. Why Was Paramjit Singh Detained? Singh was detained at the airport due to a decades-old payment issue. Years ago, he used a pay phone without paying. His counsel, Luis Angeles, explained that it was a minor crime for which Singh had already served a sentence, taken full accountability, and paid his debt to society. Held at Airport for 5 Days, Then Hospitalised According to Singh’s family, he suffers from a heart condition and has a brain tumour. After his detention, he was kept at the airport for five days, during which his health deteriorated. He was then moved to the emergency room. The family only learned of this after receiving a medical bill. They claim they were not informed about his worsening condition during detention. Legal Status and Family’s Plea Mentioning that his client shouldn’t have been detained at the first place, Paramjit Singh’s lawyer Luis Angeles said, “As a lawful permanent resident and green card holder, he shouldn’t have been detained in the first place. He has always followed the rules to the letter. We often hear the mantra of ‘follow the rules’ to achieve legal status in this country. Well, that’s exactly what he did. He entered the United States lawfully, adjusted his status properly, built his American dream through hard work, and has been a significant contributor to his community.” His brother Charanjit Singh added that they are trying to post the bond he was granted in connection with the pay phone incident, but the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is employing tactics to prolong his detention. “We are trying to post the bond. We’re just trying to speak to someone, trying to communicate with someone,” Charanjit Singh said.
