Why Is Everyone Talking About This Deleted Scene From 'Dear Zindagi'?

On the outside, Kaira has it all. A promising cinematographer who lives in Goa and has friends to hang out with. On the inside, it’s all a mess. Kaira, in her 20s, suffers from insomnia. Her relationship with her family isn’t the healthiest. Her romantic relationships fail miserably, one after another. She is stuck in this endless loop of hopelessness and grows restless by the minute. It’s only after she bumps into psychologist Jehangir Khan that she begins unpacking the vast corners of her mind. Directed by Gauri Shinde, Dear Zindagi proved to be a breezy watch for Hindi movie viewers, as it explored the topic of mental health in a manner that was both palatable and relatable. The movie was devoid of over-the-top hero entry, item numbers, or whistle-worthy scenes. There was no hype, no buildup. This feel-good factor resonated with the audiences, and Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt were praised for their nuanced performances. Bhatt was appreciated for portraying an individual trying to navigate life in their 20s. Khan’s therapy sessions felt like an extension of the actor himself, imparting life advice with his suave charm and wit. So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that the 2016 movie still frequently appears in conversations about feel-good Bollywood movies. However, did you know the makers of Dear Zindagi had decided to omit a scene from the movie? The said deleted scene featuring Bhatt aboard a plane was shared in 2023 by Red Chillies Entertainment, and it has once again surfaced on the good side of the Internet. “Yeh Aaj Kal Ke Bache” The deleted scene shows Kaira boarding a plane as she discovers an elderly man seated in her chosen seat. The passenger urges Kaira to swap seats with him as he wants to travel with his son. She reluctantly agrees to the request only to realise that the man’s booked seat was a middle one, with male passengers on either side of her. Uncomfortable with this, Kaira returns to her seat and protests. The old man is taken aback by her demand. “Yeh aaj kal ke bache (Children these days),” he says as he infantilises her, veering off on a condescending tangent, mouthing that the new generation of kids has no regard for the elderly. Kaira, annoyed by the glaring entitlement, goes on a rant, educating the passenger about the disrespect he was showing towards her, and reminding him about why being respectful isn’t a one-way street. “Relatable” The 1-minute 41-second-long deleted scene made its way to Reddit’s Bollywood subreddit, where the poster shared the video and wrote how the scene was relatable and should have made the cut in the final edit. “Expecting to give up aisle or window for middle is a crime,” wrote one responding to the scene. “A good movie. The monologue was good too with the parents.” Another commented, asking people to call out entitled boomers. “Call out the boomers when they mess with you. We don’t want one sided izzat that comes with conditions.” “I haven’t seen the movie but that guy in the end definitely didn’t come just to drop her in the plane right? What is this bus or what (sic).” This scene from Dear zindagi was so brilliant and relatable shouldn’t have been cut from the movie byu/tweetyfruity inbollynewsandgossips “this movie was such a huge part of my own journey with therapy and having the courage to articulate my thoughts without being reactive or excessively triggered! they’ve stopped making movies like these, or maybe we’ve stopped watching stories that make us sit, think, reflect and question (sic).” A user claimed that they had already seen the “deleted” scene in the theatre.
