Why have parents prevented their children from returning to a school in Mallorca?

Since the start of the school year last week, parents of children at the Maria Antònia Salvà Primary School in Son Sardina (Palma) have been refusing to allow the children to attend the school. The reason for this was the appointment of a teacher, Miquel Roldán, who in 2024 was convicted following the harassment of a pupil at a school in Marratxi.

Roldán, who also has a certain recognition in Mallorca as a singer (or did have), was given a one-year sentence; he had violated a restraining order. But mitigating circumstances were taken into consideration – no previous offences and payment of compensation to the boy in question. The sentence was suspended.

According to the AFA teachers association, he applied for a position at the Son Sardina school (a primary school), where he had previously taught. Parents insist that he isn’t fit to teach minors. Beyond the court ruling, they point to his fake disappearance at the end of 2022 and to a song about a relationship between a teacher and a teenager.

The Balearic education ministry decided to relegate him to support duties and assigned a backup teacher to be with him and to prevent him from being alone with pupils. This did not satisfy parents, who have initiated legal proceedings. “The objective is for him to no longer teach at this school or at any other school.”

The ‘strike’ by parents has no clear end in sight. Teachers association and education ministry representatives met on Wednesday, the ministry explaining there was no disciplinary action against Roldán.
