Redford explained that Szaggars did not know much about his films at that time, making it a genuine relationship, not “coloured by success.””It was a wonderful beginning of a relationship, because it began as two human beings meeting each other and finding a connection as two human beings, rather than being colored by success.”The actor added that Szaggars being unaware of his career and popularity meant he “started from a more even playing field” and “didn’t have to worry about any agenda.” He considered it a “nice way to start” their romance.Robert Redford and Sibylle Szaggars tied the knot in a private ceremony with only 30 family members at the Louis C. Jacob Hotel in Hamburg, Germany, in July 2009.Speaking in the aforementioned panel, Szaggars recalled how she was nervous about meeting Redford for the first time, as she had not seen many of his films. Oh my God, I don’t know any of his films.”Sibylle Szaggars then rented some of Robert Redford’s films before meeting him, on the advice of one of the actor’s friends. Two days before the dinner, she watched a few minutes of those six or eight films she had, in case he brought it up at their dinner. However, Redford never brought those up.”I thought, ‘What if he wants to talk about his movies?’ I have no idea, that would be so embarrassing. I probably would have mixed everything. Of course, he did not talk about it, so I was rescued and saved,” Szaggars said.Robert Redford also shared his wife’s passion for the environment, and they worked together on multiple issues. In 2015, Sibylle Szaggars founded The Way of the Rain, which focused on artistic and educational performances, aiming to spread awareness about various environmental issues and the protection of the planet.
