Mumbai, October 27: Today, October 27, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan R. Gavai (BR Gavai) recommended to the Union Law Ministry the appointment of Justice Surya Kant as the next CJI. The recommendation paves the way for Justice Kant to become the 53rd Chief Justice of India. It must be noted that CJI BR Gavai will retire on November 23. The recommendation of Justice Surya Kant's name as the next CJI comes after the Law Ministry sought CJI BR Gavai's suggestion for his successor. With Justice Surya Kant's recommendation as the next Chief Justice of India, it's important to know who he is. At present, Justice Surya Kant is the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court and is notably next in line by seniority to take over as the next CJI of India. He will most likely assume office upon Justice Gavai's retirement once the law ministry confirms his appointment. Know His Education and Legal Background Once he assumes office, Justice Surya Kant is expected to serve in the top judicial post until his retirement on February 9, 2027, a tenure which is most likely to span approximately 14 months. According to the Supreme Court's official website, Justice Surya Kant was born on February 10, 1962, in a middle-class family in Haryana. The 62-year-old Supreme Court judge graduated from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, in 1981, and went on to obtain his law degree from the Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984. Justice Surya Kant began his legal practice at the District Court in Hisar in 1984 and later shifted to Chandigarh in 1985, where he practised law at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, according to Justice Kant's profile on the Supreme Court's official website. As per Justice Surya Kant's profile, he specialised in constitutional, service, and civil matters over the years, and went on to represent several universities, boards, corporations, banks, and even the High Court itself. Justice Surya Kant's Assets It is worth noting that Justice Kant earned the distinction of becoming the youngest Advocate General of Haryana on July 7, 2000. The next year, he was designated as a Senior Advocate and served as Advocate General until his elevation as a permanent judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004. Justice Kant also served as a member of the Governing Body of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) for two consecutive terms from February 2007 to February 2011.
