Who Is Jessica Hull? Everything You Need to Know About Australia’s Middle-Distance Star

“I have my place in the history books.” Something every athlete ever wants to say. Something every athlete dreams of saying — the words Jessica Hull proudly noted in July 2024 after claiming the 2000m record at the Diamond League meeting in Monaco. But even before that, Jessica Hull had known a thing or two about holding records.
The 28-year-old has been one of the most consistent runners in the distance category, winning from time to time and definitely setting national records. And Jessica Hull continued the trend at the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships, claiming a bronze in the 1500m race. So, what do you know about her life? Let us help you out.
Where was Jessica Hull born, and how did she start running?
Born on October 22, 1996, in Wollongong, New South Wales, the runner had her beginnings in the sport quite early. “I started running in year 2 at my primary school cross country carnival,” Jessica Hull had shared, according to Australian Athletics. “The cross country carnival was mandatory once you got to year 2, so it was my first introduction to running and I loved it!”
Her father, Simon, was a junior national-level middle-distance runner, which meant he had all the know-how of how to be the initial guide for his daughter’s track career. And his training was the strong foundation that allowed her to become one of the best Australian middle-distance runners ever.
Which university did Jessica Hull attend, and what did she achieve?
Despite being from the land down under, her talent did find its way to the USA, where she was part of the University of Oregon team that won various NCAA championships, and helped her become a 7-time All-American. Overall, she was a 4-time NCAA champion and set two school records. In 2018, she set the indoor mile school record, running at 4:31.76 minutes. That year, she also won the 1500m race and the distance medley relay.
As for the other school record, she registered a time of 8:53.91 in the 3000m, starting to establish herself as a mainstay in middle-distance running. In 2019, she was champion across multiple races in the indoors, 3000m, and distance medley, while getting a podium place in cross country, too.
Academically, she completed a degree in Human Physiology (major) while minoring in Psychology and Sports Business.
When did Jessica Hull turn professional?
The 2025 Worlds bronze medalist had one more year of outdoor NCAA eligibility but decided to go pro in 2019, especially with the IAAF World Championships looming that year. She signed with the management firm Total Sports US, which took her to Pete Julian’s professional running group, a Nike-sponsored team. She signed a global long-term deal with Nike while starting her pro journey at the World Championships in Doha.
Big things were awaited, weren’t they? And things unfolded exactly as expected. With each passing race, she kept improving her own time, easily being the best Australian middle-distance racer of her generation and arguably one of the best to come out of Oceania ever.
What are Jessica Hull’s career highlights?
As of September 17, 2025, Hull holds the world record in the 2000m race (Diamond League meet in Monaco, 2024 – 5:19.70 minutes.
She won the silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the 1500m, making her the first Australian woman to medal in the 1500. Now, she added a bronze at the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
She is also a 2025 World Indoor bronze medalist.
Since 2020, Jessica Hull has set 23 Australian records (6 in Olympic events and 17 in other distances and indoors).
Her personal best in the 1500m is 3:50.83 at the Paris Diamond League 2024, a national record, and the 5th fastest time ever. She also has the Oceania record and national record for the mile race, coming on July 19, 2025, at the London Athletics Meet in London.
Now that seems like quite a resume, doesn’t it?
