Gourangalal Das, presently serving as a joint secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, has been appointed as India’s next envoy to the Republic of Korea, according to an announcement by the MEA on Wednesday. He is expected to assume his new role shortly.
“Shri Gourangalal Das (IFS: 1999), presently Joint Secretary in the Ministry, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Korea,” the MEA said in a brief statement.
Das, in his current role, has been instrumental in the ongoing negotiations between India and China to address the prolonged standoff in Eastern Ladakh, which has impacted bilateral relations since mid-2020. His strategic insights and diplomatic skills have been crucial in shaping India’s cautious approach towards its northern neighbour.
Previously, he served as the Director General of the India-Taipei Association, India’s representative office in Taiwan, where he greatly strengthened bilateral ties. He also held the position of Joint Secretary (Americas) at the Ministry of External Affairs, where he managed India’s strategic partnership with the United States, and served as Counsellor (Political) at the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C.
Additionally, he occupied various roles within the Indian mission in Beijing, gaining substantial expertise in Chinese affairs. He also worked as Deputy Secretary, External Affairs, in the Prime Minister’s Office during Dr. Manmohan Singh’s tenure.
Gourangalal Das Educational Qualification
Born in Barpeta, Assam, Das is renowned for both his diplomatic skills and academic accomplishments. He topped the HSLC in 1991 and secured second place in the Science Stream in HS in 1993. He graduated with Honours in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and completed his Postgraduate studies in Economics at the Delhi School of Economics.
He is married to Harsha Das, a senior official in the Delhi Government and daughter of a railway officer from Jharkhand. They have two children—a son in Class 10 and a daughter in Class 5, both studying in Delhi. His brother, Hemanga Lal Das, is an engineer at Facebook’s California office.
