Jack Schlossberg, former US President John F Kennedy's grandson, is set to run for New York’s 12th Congressional District. He is running to replace retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and began his campaign on Wednesday, November 12. In an official statement obtained via Politico, Jack Schlossberg shared his decision to run for Congress. It said:"Jack here with an exciting update .. we are OFFICIALLY launching Jack for New York TOMORROW, November 12 !! We’ve been working so hard over here and cannot wait to kick the campaign into high gear." Born in 1993, Jack Schlossberg is the youngest child and only son of Caroline Kennedy and her husband, artist Edwin Schlossberg. The couple also share two daughters, Rose and Tatiana. These three children are the only grandchildren of John F Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Jack's mother, Caroline Kennedy is the eldest surviving child and only daughter of former President John F Kennedy and former First Lady, Jackie Kennedy. She is an author, attorney and the former United States ambassador. She has most recently served as an ambassador to Australia (2022-2024) and, previously, as a Japan ambassador from 2013 to 2017. Jack's father, Edwin Schlossberg, is an artist and museum exhibitor. Schlossberg married Caroline Kennedy in 1986. He said: "I also bring two years now of experience in a toxic and polluted media environment where, unlike a lot of people, I know how to breathe that air. I think that this district needs somebody who knows how to fight back effectively in this new political era that we’re living in."His campaign website also went live on Tuesday, and said it is for a "new generation of leadership" in New York. A blurb on the website also stated:"Each generation of Americans is tested. The 2026 midterms is our moment. I’m running for Congress because the best part of the greatest city on earth needs to be heard loud and clear in Washington and deserves a representative who won’t back down."Schlossberg had first teased that he would be running for Congress in September this year. JFK's grandson mentioned that he is exploring the idea of forming a committee to bid for the New York City congressional seat held by Nadler currently. The latter will not be seeking reelection in 2026. Nadler, however, dismissed Jack Schlossberg's chances of winning his seat despite his being a part of the Kennedy family. "Well, there’s nothing particularly good or bad about a Kennedy holding my seat. But the Kennedy, unlike Schlossberg, should be somebody with a record of public service, a record of public accomplishment, and he doesn’t have one. He certainly is not going to be a major candidate. There will be major candidates," Nadler said.Jack Schlossberg is well known for being a fierce critic of President Donald Trump's administration and has been vocal about his opinions on X. Despite being a part of the John F Kennedy family, Caroline Kennedy raised Jack and her other children away from the spotlight. In a 2011 interview with Parade, Kennedy revealed her parenting style was inspired by her mother, Jackie Kennedy. In 2015, Jack Schlossberg graduated from Yale University and joined his mother while she was the US ambassador in Japan. He worked in Suntory in Japan, before returning to his country in 2017. Schlossberg then went to Harvard Graduate School and graduated with a dual degree from Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School in 2022. Speaking on his Instagram, Schlossberg has been a vocal supporter of his mother, Caroline Kennedy. He wrote:"My mom’s my idol and there’s nothing false about worshiping her. She’s absolutely the s**t—no one in America’s been through more and held more on her shoulders."Jack Schlossberg has also supported Caroline Kennedy in her protest against her cousin, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s appointment as the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. He has himself criticized him on social media about his spasmodic dysphonia, which is a speech disorder. Schlossberg running for Congress marks his important entry into US politics. As one of John F Kennedy's grandchildren, expectations will remain high from his political career.
