Who is Candace Owens? Right-wing influencer questions official narrative of Charlie Kirk's killing

Candace Owens has caused controversy in the US after suggesting that the situation surrounding Charlie Kirk’s death isn’t all what it seems.

The 36-year-old political commentator and right-wing firebrand dropped a video on YouTube that’s already been watched more than 7m times in which she asked a number of questions surrounding the death of her friend.

It comes a little over one week after 31-year-old political provocateur Kirk was shot and killed while attending a college campus debate in Utah.

Speaking about her friend, Owens admitted that she “wept” for her friend after he was “publicly executed” in front of the world before going on to highlight some potential holes she’s noticed in the official narrative surrounding his death.

Well known for unapologetically voicing opinions as well as sometimes promoting conspiracy theories on her platforms, Owen’s latest remarks have already caused a stir among those she named in the video.

Elsewhere, Owen’s is also facing legal action after previously accusing Emmanuel Macron’s wife, Brigitte, of being born a man in claims that the couple’s lawyer says have been “incredibly upsetting.”

Owens has built a brand as one of the leading Black right-wing commentators in the US. But her work has consistently landed her in hot water, from criticising everything from Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ+ rights to Israel’s dominance over US politics.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Candace Owens is a right-wing political commentator and conservative activist born in the state of New York, in the US.

While she initially identified as liberal, her personal beliefs seemed to shift as she got older and became more involved in the conservative movement.

She previously worked for Turning Point USA, a right-wing non-profit organisation founded by Charlie Kirk, which aims to promote conservative politics in the US education system.

She then joined The Daily Wire, where she hosted her own talk show, inviting guests like Donald Trump to appear.

Throughout her time in the political limelight, Owens hasn’t held back when it comes to criticising people she disagrees with. From claiming TikTok is “socially engineering” men to be gay to accusing Black Lives Matter protestors of being a “bunch of whiny toddlers,” her views have often faced considerable backlash.

More recently, Owens was fired from The Daily Wire after fiercely criticising Israel over what many now agree is a genocide in Gaza.

Since her firing, she has continued her show on social media platforms.

Candace Owens met her British husband, George Farmer, at a political event in 2018.

Reports reveal the devout Christian and former Parler CEO asked her to marry him over FaceTime just 17 days after they met in London, before getting married in 2019.

The couple have since welcomed four children together.

Owens has described herself as a good friend of Kirk, who was devastated to learn about his death.

Since then, she has also voiced some strong opinions on the situation that appeared to cast doubt on the official narrative being shared about the incident.

Her latest YouTube video directly takes aim at Benjamin Netanyahu, the controversial Israeli leader currently waging a brutal onslaught against the Palestinian people of Gaza.

Some 10 minutes into the hour-long clip, Candace questioned what she felt were suggestions that Kirk “died for Israel” and asked why Netanyahu claimed to have been such close friends with the podcaster.

“Charlie was concerned about Israel and their influence on American politics,” she said, and that he was coming under increasing pressure from Israeli influences. She also claims Kirk was offered “tonnes of money,” which he declined, and said she felt Netanyahu’s invite to Israel was a “laced threat.”

She also alleged that billionaire Bill Ackman had “pressured him,” a claim that the Jewish American businessman has since denied. Ackman later said, Owens “slandered me by accusing me of ‘staging an intervention’ with Charlie Kirk in which ‘threats were made’ with respect to his supposed ‘evolving stance’ on Israel at an event I hosted in the Hamptons.”

Owens then goes into the Kirk investigation, adding that some claims are “confusing” and suggesting “more people are involved with this.”

“It feels like we’re being lied to,” Owens continues, adding “I don’t trust anything right now.”
