New York: New York’s Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has made a controversial remark on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government while lashing out at the incumbent New York mayor Eric Adams. Addressing a gathering in a New York Gurudwara, Zohran Mamdani said that the reason he's going to run against Eric Adams is because this city has become far too unaffordable for anyone who calls it home and also accused PM Modi and the BJP-led Indian government of perpetrating violence against the Sikh community. "I know many in this Gurdwara are facing the same concern -- how they can afford rent, water bills, electricity, child care and any other basic need to survive. And this man (Adams) has taken every opportunity to make life more expensive, all while supporting PM Modi and the Indian government's approach to violence against our community members," Mamdani said. How Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi Slammed Mamdani Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray camp - UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi slammed Zohran Mamdani's anti-India remarks saying that while its not their business as to who New York elects as its Mayor but the candidate's remark in a Gurudwara are problematic, questioning who is writing Mamdani's script. "While none of our business who New York elects as their Mayor but what Zohran is saying here in the Gurudwara is extremely problematic. Who is writing his script? Gurpatwant Singh Pannun?" asked Priyanka Chaturvedi. Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, a Queens Assemblyman and self-described socialist, is the front-runner to succeed Mayor Eric Adams. If elected, Mamdani would oversee New York City's $115 billion budget and a workforce of nearly 300,000, as reported by the New York Post. Is Zohran Mamdani Leading in Early Trends The New York Post, citing a recent survey conducted by Victory Insights, said Mamdani is in a commanding lead over competitors including former Governor Andrew Cuomo, securing 46.7 per cent compared to Cuomo's 28.6 per cent, while candidate Republican Curtis Sliwa trails at 16.2 per cent. The poll also revealed that 26.5 per cent of respondents are considering leaving the city if Mamdani, aged 34, wins, potentially becoming the youngest mayor in New York City in over a century. Mamdani's lead is bolstered by the presence of Cuomo, a Democrat running as an independent, and Republican Sliwa, both of whom are expected to divide support among moderate and conservative voters. Earlier on Friday, US House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries endorsed Mamdani for New York City mayor. Incumbent Mayor Adams, a centrist Democrat, suspended his struggling re-election campaign last month following a federal probe, although he was cleared of corruption allegations, the New York Post reported. Despite withdrawing, Adams remains on the ballot as an independent, alongside lawyer Jim Walden. When is New York's mayoral election? The general election for New York mayor will take place on November 4. The contest will determine whether the city, often called the "capital of capitalism", will be led by a socialist for the first time in history. New York City's 5.1 million registered voters can participate in early voting through November 2 at designated polling locations. As per the New York Post, polling hours vary, with most sites open from 9 am to 5 pm (local time), except October 28 and October 29 (10 am to 8 pm) and October 31 (8 am to 4 pm). The mayoral campaign has focused on key issues, including crime, homelessness, affordability, and policies regarding Israel and US President Donald Trump.
