White United Airlines flights are canceled? Full list of cuts

Chicago-based United Airlines has released a list of weekend flights that are impacted by the Federal Aviation Administration's cuts across 40 of the nation's busiest markets, with more than 100 United flights in and out of Chicago airports already canceled as of Friday. "The FAA’s goal is to relieve pressure on the aviation system so that every airline can continue to operate safely," United said in a message on its website. "That is the FAA’s highest priority, and ours as well. No matter what environment we’re operating in, we won’t compromise on safety." United's announcement comes as the U.S. government shutdown -- now the longest in history -- drags into its 38th day. Tuesday, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned of "mass chaos, cancellations and delays" if lawmakers allow the shutdown to continue into next week. Transportation Security Agents and Air traffic controllers have been working unpaid since the shutdown began Oct. 1, and most have been on duty six days a week while putting in mandatory overtime. With some calling out of work due to frustration, taking second jobs or not having money for child care or gas, staffing shortages during some shifts have led to flight delays at a number of U.S. airports. Local In a message posted to United Airlines website Wednesday, CEO Scott Kirby confirmed the reductions are set to start Nov. 7 with the airline set to make "rolling updates" to its schedule in an effort to give customers advance notice. "We'll use our app, website and push notifications to communicate to customers directly if their flight changes, and to offer rebooking options," United said. "We want to provide them with as much information as we can and in a way that's simple and easy to understand." The airline said flight schedule reductions will focus on "regional flying and domestic mainline flights" that do not travel between United Airlines' seven U.S. hubs. "United’s long-haul international flying will not be affected, nor will flights that connect our hub airports: Chicago O’Hare, Denver, Houston Intercontinental, Los Angeles, Newark Liberty International, San Francisco and Washington Dulles," an updated message, posted Thursday night said. United also said refunds were eligible for passengers during this period, even if their flights aren't impacted. "That includes non-refundable tickets and Basic Economy tickets." Overall, United has canceled more than 100 flights each day, Friday, Nov. 7 through Sunday, Nov. 9, the airline's website showed. Of those, 34 United flights scheduled to depart or arrive at Chicago O'Hare International Airport Friday were cut, with that number increasing to 38 Saturday. Sunday, 42 United flights in and out of O'Hare were canceled. United's full list of flight cancellations this weekend, which includes routes, times and flight numbers, can be found here. Other flight cancellations at O'Hare, Midway As of 5:45 a.m. Friday, a total of 78 flights at O'Hare were canceled, the Chicago Department of Aviation flight status website showed, with 18 cancellations at Midway. Dozens of delays at both airports were also expected. In a statement sent to NBC Chicago, the CDA said it is "monitoring the situation closely" as it awaits further details on potential impacts at Midway and O'Hare. "Our team will continue coordinating with airline and federal partners to help minimize any disruptions," the statement said. Overall, the cuts could represent as many as 1,800 flights and upward of 268,000 seats combined, according to an estimate by aviation analytics firm Cirium. Here's what some other airlines have said about cancellations: Southwest Airlines A spokesperson for Southwest Airlines, which operates up to 250 daily departures from Midway, told NBC Chicago Thursday the airline is "evaluating how the planned FAA flight reductions will affect our schedule and will communicate directly with customers as soon as possible." "Southwest Airlines is determining the scheduling adjustments needed to meet the required FAA flight reductions," an updated statement from the airline said. "While the vast majority of our Customers’ flights will not be disrupted, all Southwest Customers, with travel booked through next Wednesday, November 12, may adjust their travel plans at no cost, or receive a refund if they choose not to travel, regardless of whether their flight is affected. We will communicate directly with affected Customers as soon as possible. Nothing is more important to Southwest than the Safety of our Customers and Employees. We continue to urge Congress to immediately resolve its impasse and restore the National Airspace System to its full capacity." American Airlines American Airlines posted a travel alert to its website listing 20 airports impacted by the cuts, including Chicago O'Hare. Anyone traveling to or from those airports can change their flight with waived fees under certain circumstances. More information can be found here. In a statement posted to its website Thursday, the airline said it expects the "vast majority" of customers travel to be unaffected, and that long-haul international travel will remain as scheduled. "As schedule changes are made, we’ll proactively reach out to customers who are impacted, American said. As always, we encourage all customers to check their flight status on aa.com or the mobile app, which will provide real-time updates. "In the meantime, we continue to urge leaders in Washington, D.C., to reach an immediate resolution to end the shutdown," the statement said. More information can be found here. Delta Delta says it "expects to operate the vast majority of our flights as scheduled, including all long-haul international service, and will work to minimize customer impact while keeping safety our top priority.
