When it comes to birth control, there are many effective ways to avoid a pregnancy. According to experts, while the most effective way is abstinence, it is not always possible. There are many permanent or low-maintenance options which include implants or sterilisation – along with pills. How effective are common birth control methods? Doctors say the effectiveness of contraceptive methods comes totally from their usage. Studies say birth control pills can be 99 per cent effective with perfect use – if you do not miss a dose or forget to take it on time. Also, barrier methods – like condoms – have to be used during intercourse, but their effective rates are much lower, as there is a huge scope of error with condom breakage. However, permanent methods like sterilisation or IUDs are said to be the most effective ways of birth control – with 99.99 per cent surety, followed by vasectomy and tied tubes with 99.60 per cent. What is the best birth control method for men? Doctors say while a vasectomy is the most effective birth control for men – it is a permanent surgical procedure that cuts off the supply of sperm to the semen. However, it is also important to understand that a vasectomy is not effective immediately, as the sperm that were already there before the procedure may be present. And so, an alternative form of birth control should also be used for at least three months after the procedure. After sterilisation, the most effective reversible birth control for men is using condoms – which can prevent pregnancy by 87 per cent. Emergency contraception The emergency contraception pill – also known as the ‘morning after pill’ – can be used to prevent pregnancy after sex if contraception was either not used or failed. This pill contains hormones that are designed to prevent pregnancy up to five days after unprotected sex but are most effective if taken in the first 24 hours. Doctors say it is a good idea to do a pregnancy test a few weeks later to make sure you are not pregnant. How can you choose the right birth control method? While it is not only important what method you choose, but also what fits your lifestyle. Even though vasectomy is the most effective, many men do not want to undergo it and use condoms instead. Also, you should consider the following: If and when you want to get pregnant in the future How birth control will interact with other medications if you are taking any – like diabetes and heart issues Any health conditions you have, such as high blood pressure Doctors say since birth control is a personal decision, it should always be decided after discussing it with your partner and doctor.
