With their season on the line in Wednesday’s Game 2, the Yankees found a way to avoid elimination and force a series-deciding Game 3. The winner takes on the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS, starting on Saturday, Oct. 4.
Second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. returned to the lineup on Wednesday after being benched Tuesday and he was pivotal in securing the win for New York. In the top of the seventh with two runners on for the Red Sox, Chisholm made a diving stab to keep a hard hit single from pinch hitter Masataka Yoshida in the infield. Although his throw to first was offline, his initial play slowed up third baseman Nate Eaton, who held up at third despite being waved home. The Yankees got out of the bases loaded jam and then Chisholm proceeded to score the go-ahead run from first on an Austin Wells single down the right field line in the eighth.
Shortstop Trevor Story did everything he could for Boston, providing a 2-run single to tie the game in third and then a game-tying solo homer in the sixth after Aaron Judge had just hit an RBI single the inning before. However, Story was the final out in that crucial seventh inning, flying out to center field with a ball that carried all the way to the warning track, but wasn’t hit quite hard enough to be a game-changing grand slam.
On Thursday, the Red Sox are giving the ball to rookie Connelly Early, who has 19.1 innings across four major league starts that all came in September. He pitched five innings of shutout ball with 11 strikeouts while allowing five hits in his debut, a 6-0 win over The Athletics. But Boston lost all three of his next starts with Early getting credited for the loss in the last two games. Still, his worst outing was on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays when he allowed 3 runs over four innings with four Ks. In his other two starts, he had seven strikeouts in each, while allowing 1 run over five in his second start, which was also against The Athletics, and then tossing five innings of 2-run ball in his most recent start against the Detroit Tigers. The Red Sox lost both of those games 2-1, with Early getting the decision against the Tigers.
The Yankees are trusting their own rookie in Massachusetts native and former Red Sox fan, Cam Schlittler to propel them into the ALDS. Schlittler has 14 starts on the season and has gone 4-3, pitching 73 innings across the games with 84 strikeouts, 31 walks and a 2.96 ERA with a 1.22 WHIP.
