Game 1 was a tale of two approaches. On one side, was the Yankees, who pulled the AL wins leader, Max Fried, after throwing 102 pitches while allowing four hits and striking out six across 6.1 shutout innings. He was relieved by Luke Weaver, who allowed a walk, two hits and 2 runs without recording an out. On the other side was the Red Sox, who left Garrett Crochet on the mound through 7.2 as he threw 117 pitches and picked up 11 strikeouts while allowing four hits and just 1 run.
New York is now trying to stave off elimination and will send Carlos Rodon to the mound on Wednesday. The Yankees are 1-2 in games Rodon started against their rivals this season, losing a pair of June games where Rodon went five innings and allowed 5 runs and 4 runs, respectively, although only 3 of the 4 runs were earned in the second start. In August Rodon went 5.2 and only allowed one hit despite walking five, and allowed just 2 runs in a 7-2 New York win.
But he will be going against Brayan Bello, who is 2-1 in three starts against the Yankees. The first two were both seven-inning shutouts that Boston won 2-0 and 1-0. The third game came in September and New York had five hits and four runs of Bello in five innings.
The winner of this series will go to Toronto to take on the AL East-winning Blue Jays.
