Lake Catholic returns to Southwest Ohio as the lone local state champion from last season when it won the Division V title against Franklin Bishop Fenwick in four games. The Cougars are ranked No. 9 by the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association and are seeking a fourth consecutive state championship. The only other ranked team remaining in Division V is Lake Catholic’s semifinal opponent in No. 6 Cincinnati Summit Country Day. The only other defending state champion back in the semifinals is Cincinnati Seton in Division I. Seton is No. 1 in the state and enters as one of four remaining undefeated teams. Who from Northeast Ohio is seeking its first state title? Up in Division I, Mentor is back in the state semifinals for the first time since 2007. The Cardinals, who will face No. 2 Lewis Center Olentangy Orange on Saturday at Vandalia Butler, have reached the state semifinals five times. They have only reached the state championship match once, losing in 1998. In Division II, Avon advanced to the state tournament for the second year in a row. The No. 3 Eagles, who lost in the semifinal last season to Whitehouse Anthony Wayne, will battle No. 2 Magnificat on Saturday at Wittenberg in the only semifinal matchup between area teams. Independence in Division VI is the third and last of the area schools still looking to claim its first state title. The Blue Devils are in the state semifinals for the seventh time, all since 2017, and have reached the championship match four times but have lost all four. Who can add to their state title collection? Lake Catholic is not only looking for its fourth state championship in a row but the fifth in school history. The first was in 2012. Magnificat is after a second state championship after it won in 2021. Archbishop Hoban in Division III is back in the state semifinals for the first time since winning back-to-back-to-back state championships from 1990 to 1992. This is the 10th state semifinal trip for the Knights in school history, and they are also looking for a fifth state title. NDCL is looking for its fourth state championship with its last coming in 2022. Hoban and NDCL could provide us with the only state championship match between area schools if they win their respective semifinals.
