When Pranav Mohanlal Spoke About Being Superstar Mohanlal's Son: ‘Why Should I Feel Great?’

Actor Pranav Mohanlal, son of Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, is known for his humility and simplicity. Unlike many star kids, Pranav prefers to stay away from the spotlight, living a life of minimalism and purpose. Even between films, he avoids media appearances and public events, embracing an understated lifestyle that his father often admired. Mohanlal once shared that his son never demanded luxuries, even as a child. “(As a student) He lived in a hostel room with minimal facilities. His world was always one of very limited amenities; he never demanded more, even though I could afford some luxuries,” Mohanlal recalled in 2017. The superstar said he never imposed his dreams on Pranav and only guided him on what not to become. Before Pranav’s debut as a child actor in Onnaman (2002), Mohanlal admired his son’s effortless approach to acting. “He just did what he does in real life. Like me, he also doesn’t know what acting is all about,” the veteran actor said, adding that Pranav’s natural energy even posed challenges for filmmakers who had to adjust to his quick movements on camera. But Mohanlal’s proudest moment came when Pranav was asked about being the superstar’s son. His reply was both mature and strikingly self-assured. “He said, ‘He is my father. Why should I feel great because I am Mohanlal’s son?’ I liked his cool attitude,” Mohanlal revealed. The father added that he hopes Pranav always remains that grounded and genuine. After acting in Punarjani (2003), which earned him the Kerala State Film Award for Best Child Artist, Pranav wanted to continue acting. However, his mother, Suchitra, advised him to focus on education first. “You may or may not become as big a star as your father. You need both talent and luck to be a big success,” she told him. Listening to her, Pranav pursued a degree in philosophy from the University of New South Wales, Australia. His mother’s guidance continues to shape his life, he once wrote in Mathrubhumi Yathra magazine that he still abides by her only two rules: not to ride a bike and not to smoke cigarettes. Before his official acting debut in Aadhi (2018), Pranav worked as an assistant director on Papanasam and Life of Josutty. Since then, he has featured in Irupathiyonnaam Noottaandu, Hridayam, Varshangalkku Shesham, and L2: Empuraan. He will next be seen in Rahul Sadasivan’s Diés Iraé.
