Group 7 has become the new “it girl” on TikTok. The phenomenon began in mid-October, when singer Sophia James shared a series of videos via TikTok. In the first clip, James, 26, said she recently received a parking ticket while dancing and singing to her track “So Unfair.” James began posting more videos (initially still about her parking ticket) in the hopes of users hearing her music. By the fourth video, James labeled the clips — and the fans — into groups and shifted the content to be more about the idea of being in a certain group. “If you’re seeing this you are in group 4,” text read over video No. 4. “I am posting a bunch of videos and seeing which ones reach the most viewers. This is the fourth post of the batch so you are group 4.” James shared three more videos that night, until her seventh and final one went viral. “If you are watching this video, you are in group 7,” James said in the clip. “I have posted seven videos tonight and this is the seventh one. Just a little science experiment to see what kind of video gets the most reach.” She added, “I don’t know what that says about you, but you’re in group 7!” Scroll down to learn more about the viral TikTok trend: How Did Users React to Being in Group 7? With more than 37.1 million views to date, users quickly weighed in on being in the group. “I (hereby) declare group 7 is the most elite group,” one wrote in the comments section, while another added, “Group 7 is the hot girl group I don’t make the rules.” A third wrote, “I have immediate beef with groups 1-6.” Which Celebrities Are in Group 7? Several celebrities have since revealed that they are in Group 7 — including Olympian Stephen Nedoroscik. “A light workout for someone in group 7,” Nedoroscik wrote via TikTok, alongside a video of him doing the pommel horse. How Did Sophia James React to Going Viral With Group 7? After going viral, James shared in an interview with The New York Times that she noticed she had to “bully” the TikTok algorithm to see success. “You just have to post no matter what it is — it’s really quantity over quality,” she explained. “And so in my pursuit to get my music heard, I’ve really been trying all of these different strategies.” James also shared that she almost didn’t post the group 7 video, but had a change of heart. “I woke up the next morning and you know, like Alakazam, the group 7 video had hit the algorithm, and people just made it explode, and it became this hilarious, unexpected internet moment,” James said.
