What is Antifa - will Trump designate it as domestic terror organization? What could be the consequences?

Global Desk

President Donald Trump cited on Monday that he’d consider calling far-left anti-fascism group Antifa ( loosely structured anti-fascist movement which has no single leader or official membership) as domestic terrorists, previewing an initiative to crack down on what he’s portrayed as a large network of left-wing radicals showcasing violence. “It’s something I would do, yeah,” he said when asked if he would apply such a label, adding he would go further if his Cabinet and the Justice Department supported the proposal..Trump’s push for actionEven though Antifa lacks centralized leadership or formal membership, Trump’s readiness to take action highlights his administration’s intention to move rapidly against political opponents. As per to the people familiar with the talks, fresh measures targeting liberal organizations could be launched as soon as this week. These actions might include revoking tax-exempt for specific nonprofits or pursuing criminal prosecutions against groups accused of menacing conservatives.Connecting to Kirk’s assassinationThe president’s stance follows after the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, an incident the administration is using to emphasize what it says is coordinated left-wing aggression. While Utah Gov. Spencer Cox cited the suspect held “leftist ideology,” officials have not offered evidence tying him to any of the teams Trump seeks to aim. Even so, Trump said, “Antifa is terrible. There are other groups. We have some pretty radical groups, and they got away with murder.”Possible legal strategiesTrump cited that he had discussed with Attorney General Pam Bondi the possibility of employing racketeering laws. “I’ve asked Pam to look into that in terms of RICO, bringing RICO cases,” he mentioned. “They should be put in jail, what they’re doing to this country is really subversive.”Live EventsDeputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller reinforced this during the Oval Office time, accusing a “network of organizations” of orchestrating unrest and pointing to Black Lives Matter demonstrations as an example. Miller said, “The key point the president has been making is somebody is paying for all of this. This is not happening for free, and so out of the president’s direction, the attorney general is going to find out who is paying for it, and they will now be criminally liable for paying for violence.”Bondi’s stand on hate speechLater Monday, Bondi highlighted the administration would “target” people or groups who initiate hate speech, explaining that this policy would be applied “across the aisle.” On a podcast hosted by Katie Miller, Bondi mentioned Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania as an example, showing the arson attack on his mansion this year. She said, “We will absolutely target you, go after you, if you are targeting anyone with hate speech, anything, and that’s across the aisle.”Political backdrop and criticismThe administration’s wide framing has brought criticism from Democrats, who argue Trump is using the rhetoric of domestic security to suppress opposition. Critics fear that vague narrations of extremism could be weaponized against mainstream liberal bodies.Trump has also drawn scrutiny for his inconsistent responses to political violence. After the summer assassination of Minnesota state senator Melissa Hortman and her husband, Gov. Tim Walz named the act politically encouraged. Trump, however, dismissed the Democratic governor, stating, “I could be nice and call, but why waste time?”As Trump on Tuesday departed for a three day trip to the United Kingdom, advisers persisted mapping out methods in Washington. In his return, the president is anticipated to address Kirk’s memorial in Arizona, where his message will be likely to highlight the administration’s fresh forceful posture toward left-wing groups.FAQs:Q1.
