What Happened at Sri Sharda Institute? Self-styled godman Chaitanyananda Saraswati Questioned Over Harassment Allegations

Delhi Police on Monday questioned self-styled godman Chaitanyananda Saraswati in connection with alleged sexual harassment of female students at the Sri Sharda Institute of Indian Management. The self-styled godman was taken to the institute and questioned him in the room where he allegedly summoned students. Officers also asked about the cameras he had access to. He was later brought back to the police station, where senior officers continued interrogating him, reports ANI. A day earlier, Delhi’s Patiala House Court sent Saraswati to five days’ police custody. During this period, he is expected to be questioned about three female aides at the institute who allegedly helped him threaten students and delete lewd messages. He may also be taken back to the campus for further questioning. Saraswati’s lawyer, Manish Gandhi, claimed a “huge conspiracy” against his client, involving prominent individuals, and said the matter is “something else”. Saraswati, also known as Partha Sarathy, is accused of sexually harassing 17 female students, particularly those under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota. Police have recovered three phones, an iPad, and fake visiting cards claiming he was a UN ambassador, a BRICS commission member, and an Indian special envoy. Investigators said he had access to campus CCTV footage and allegedly used multiple names and passports, with inconsistent personal details, to operate several bank accounts. Police froze around Rs 8 crore linked to him, and reports suggest he withdrew over Rs 50 lakh after the FIR was filed on August 4. Arrest After Months on the Run Saraswati was arrested from a hotel in Agra’s Ganj area on Sunday at 3:30 AM, after evading arrest for nearly two months. He had fled Delhi after the complaint submitted on August 4 alleged that he had sexually harassed the female students. While avoiding arrest, the accused allegedly kept changing places and hotels in Vrindavan, Mathura and Agra in Uttar Pradesh and used taxis to travel. To escape detection, he stayed in cheaper hotels, a police officer said, reports PTI. What FIR Stated? Saraswati, a former chairman of the management institute in southwest Delhi, allegedly forced female students to visit his quarters late at night and sent them inappropriate text messages at odd hours, the FIR said. He allegedly kept track of the students’ movements through his phone. During the investigation, it was also revealed that the accused allegedly used different names and particulars to operate multiple bank accounts and withdrew more than Rs 50 lakh after the FIR was registered against him, the officer said. He had allegedly submitted documents with varying particulars at the time of account opening.
