So far, so good when it comes to Grand Theft Auto 6. While Rockstar has set its own massive standard to live up to, the game looks incredible so far, and fans are generally pleased with what they see. The thing is, Rockstar only has one chance to make a first impression. Even if the campaign is fantastic, there's a reason why Grand Theft Auto V's legacy has lasted over a decade. GTA Online Needs To Be Stable Immediately After The Credits Roll, There's Something To Go Back To I vividly remember the launch of Grand Theft Auto 5 back in 2013. It was a treat to dive into the game sight unseen, and discover everything the game's world had to offer along with everyone else. But over time, tensions mounted as to when the much-hyped Grand Theft Auto Online would live up to its potential. Sadly, GTA Online didn't even launch with heists, and it took Rockstar over a year to add the mode to the game. From there, fans started to play more co-op, and the modding scene evolved rapidly. What began as a side mode for an existing title evolved into its own entry and became a massive part of Rockstar's business model. There are droves of people out there who pretty much only play GTA Online, and are anxiously awaiting the launch of the new era of the game. If Rockstar doesn't nail it out of the gate, it's going to push a lot of the hardcore players to their own "legacy" servers, amid general disinterest from fans. By all counts, Rockstar is investing heavily in the future of GTA, and it stands to reason that the next iteration of GTA Online is a big part of that plan. However, we've seen wilder things from similarly positioned game companies. Rockstar Only Has One Chance To Get The Launch Right They Can Recover After, But It'll Hurt A bad first impression can turn a new fan off for life. If Rockstar doesn't invest enough in Grand Theft Auto Online, some prospective fans may move on to the numerous other open-world games available this generation. That said, even in the worst-case scenario, there are plenty of redemption arcs in gaming. Final Fantasy XIV, No Man's Sky, and even Cyberpunk 2077 come to mind. But as far as the immediate launch is concerned, fans will want things to go smoothly. Ideally, all of the above games would have launched in a better state.
