What Drake Maye said about attending the Catholic Memorial

The last question of Drake Maye’s Sunday press conference brought a smile to the quarterback’s face. He was asked why he chose to attend local high school football game between Catholic Memorial and Xaverian on Friday night. “I heard it was a big game in the local area, I think [it was] two state champions playing,” Maye said. “Just trying to support. It brings me back to those days when I was playing.” Maye made the trip to Westwood after practice and before the Patriots headed to Nashville for a blowout win against the Titans. Soaking in the atmosphere at the high school football game was a “cool” way to spend a Friday night, the quarterback said. “It was pretty cool to see them out there and I guess it was a bunch of Patriots fans,” Maye said. “So it was a pretty good and it was a pretty good game.” Xaverian won the game 25-22 on a 23-yard field-goal from junior kicker Zander Govostes as the clock ran out. Catholic Memorial had beaten Xaverian by a touchdown or less in each of the three previous meetings. It was the first time the Hawks beat the Knights since 2018. Maye wasn’t the only Boston sports celebrity at the game. Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla, whose stepson Michael Harden plays linebacker for Xaverian, was also at the game. Xaverian has won back-to-back Division 1 MIAA state championships. Catholic Memorial was the top-ranked team in Division 2 heading into the game. Maye had a dominant showing against the Titans after touching down in Nashville. He completed 21 of 23 passes and threw a pair of touchdowns in New England’s victory. He set the franchise record for highest single-game completion percentage in the regular season as the Patriots cruised to a 31-13 victory. “It was guys making plays for me,” Maye said. “Those guys up front are blocking their butts off and in the passing game they’ll make plays for me. I think we’re just trying to stay ahead of the chains and try to throw to the first guy open.” Advertisement Khari Thompson can be reached at khari.thompson@globe.com.
