A coastal defence scheme in Conwy is to restart next month after it was "paused" for the summer holidays. The £13m project involves upgrading a sea wall and rock revetments to safeguard Kinmel Bay from rising seas and future storminess. Work stopped in August to minimise tourism impacts. Cllr Nigel Smith, who represents Kinmel Bay on Conwy Council , said contractor Jones Bros will be returning to the site on Monday, November 10. Up to 80,000 tonnes of rock are being in trucked in to reinforce revetments between Kinmel Bay and Towyn . A sea wall is also being raised 50cm-75cm. Two “parklets” – miniature parks with play areas – are being created, along with car park upgrades, a cafe with toilets and street furniture. Other improvements include a new crossing point by Rhyl Harbour Café and charging points for e-bikes to encourage active travel. When the scheme began, Kinmel Bay’s beach car park at St Asaph Avenue was taken over as the contractors compound. It reopened in August but this will now close again. Writing online, Cllr Smith said: "As part of the remaining works, the existing car park will be upgraded and improved to include provision for EV car chargers, new lighting and public realm furniture." Before work stopped, the revamped sea wall was nearing completion, as was rock armour for western revetment near Golden Sands Caravan Park. However the eastern revetment is far from finished. So far, 38,500 tonnes of stone has been placed to strengthen flood defences. Since the summer, a similar amount has been harvested from the region's quarries. Cllr Smith added: "Whilst the contractor has been off-site, they have been busy in several North Wales quarries harvesting the large 3-6-tonne rock armour required for the remaining works. "(They) have a large stockpile of rock ready for when they resume the works."
