West Lyon, MMCRU top initial IHSAA rankings

Seven area teams were listed in the initial IHSAA high school football rankings, and two topped the polls in West Lyon and MMCRU.
The rankings were only released for Class 2A on down. Class 3A on up utilized RPI rankings, which is set to be released for the first time following Week 6’s slate of games.
West Lyon (5-0), which won the Class 2A state championship last season, is the No. 1-ranked team this season in Class 1A after getting off to a 5-0 start. Class 1A includes three returning state title winners in West Lyon, Grundy Center (defending Class 1A champs) and Tri-Center, who won Class A in 2024.
The Wildcats were the only area team ranked in Class 1A, but West Lyon has out-scored its opponents 233 to 13 through five weeks of play this season.
MMCRU (5-0) tops the Class A rankings as the Royals have nearly the same points differential as West Lyon as MMCRU has scored 197 points and allowed 33.
West Sioux (5-0) checks in at No. 4 in Class A and Woodbury Central (5-0) at No. 8.
West Sioux hasn’t allowed more than 14 points scored against it in any one game this season while the Falcons lowest-scoring output for the season has been 35 points. The Falcons have a road game against top-ranked MMCRU slated for Oct. 10.
Woodbury Central squeezed out a 21-14 win over IKM-Manning in Week 4, but outside of that has won its four other games by at least two scores.
In Class 2A, undefeated Okoboji (5-0) appears in the top three after the Pioneers are just a win shy of matching last season’s win total, which was the most the program has notched in a season since going 9-3 during the 2008 campaign.
At No. 4 in 2A, Western Christian (4-1) has recovered from a Week 1 loss to score four straight victories, all but one coming in a one-score contest. The Wolfpack host ranked Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley to close the season on Oct. 17.
Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley (4-1) checks in at No. 9 in 2A. A rejuvenated club only has only loss — to No. 3 Okoboji — after BH/RV has went just 5-22 over the last three seasons.
