Syracuse and Virginia are on the rise after wins this past weekend over Clemson and Stanford, respectively.
The Orange won on the road over the Tigers and the Cavaliers blew past Stanford in Charlottesville.
Both Syracuse and UVa are 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the ACC. The Orange are up to No. 5 and the Hoos are tied for sixth in this week’s Lee Enterprises ACC Power Poll.
This season’s voters are: Greg Madia and John Shifflett (Charlottesville Daily Progress), Damien Sordelett and Mark Berman (Roanoke Times) and John Dell (Winston-Salem Journal).
1. Miami (4-0, 0-0 ACC; Last week: No. 1): The Hurricanes got 116 rushing yards and a TD from RB Mark Fletcher Jr. and 80 rushing yards and a pair of TDs from RB CharMar Brown as they leaned on their ground game to finish off rival Florida, 26-7. Next: Idle
2. Florida State (3-0, 0-0 ACC; Last week: No. 2): A 35-point opening quarter propelled Florida State in its 66-10 romp of Kent State. Next: at Virginia, Friday
3. Georgia Tech (4-0, 1-0 ACC; Last week: No. 3): There was no hangover for the Yellow Jackets following their emotional win over Clemson the previous week. They took care of business while tallying 307 rushing yards and four rushing TDs in a 45-24 lopsided victory over Temple. Next: at Wake Forest, Saturday
4. Louisville (3-0, 0-0 ACC; Last week: t-No. 4): Speedster Caullin Lacy’s 75-yard punt return for a TD in the second quarter broke the game open in Louisville’s blowout win over Bowling Green. Next: at Pittsburgh, Saturday
5. Syracuse (3-1, 1-0 ACC; Last week: No. 11): QB Steve Angeli threw for 244 yards and two TDs, and was terrific in Syracuse’s upset win at Clemson before unfortunately exiting with a season-ending Achilles injury. Next: vs. Duke, Saturday
t-6. Virginia (3-1, 1-0 ACC; Last week: No. 9): Hoos WR Trell Harris became the third UVa player in as many weeks to score three touchdowns in a game as the Cavaliers piled up 590 total yards of offense and crushed Stanford. Next: vs. Florida State, Friday
t-6. Duke (2-2, 1-0 ACC; Last week: No. 13): Second-year coach Manny Diaz’s squad had dropped two straight games before bouncing back on Saturday in a win over NC State behind RB Anderson Castle’s three TDs. Next: at Syracuse, Saturday
8. NC State (3-1, 1-1 ACC; Last week: t-No. 4): The defense in Raleigh has problems. NC State has surrendered at least 400 total yards of offense in three of its first four games. Next: vs. Virginia Tech, Saturday
9. Pittsburgh (2-1, 0-0 ACC; Last week: No. 10): LB Kyle Louis is having an excellent start to the year with 19 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery. Next: vs. Louisville, Saturday
10. California (3-1, 0-0 ACC; Last week: No. 7): Woof. Cal no-showed its game at San Diego State and the Aztecs hammered the Bears, 34-0. That was a headscratcher on Saturday. Next: at Boston College, Saturday
11. SMU (2-2, 0-0 ACC; Last week: No. 8): QB Kevin Jennings’ 34-yard TD throw to Jordan Hudson provided the Mustangs a fourth-quarter lead, but they couldn’t hold it and fell to rival TCU. Next: Idle
12. Clemson (1-3, 0-2 ACC; Last week: No. 6): For all of the NFL prospects Clemson has on defense, the Tigers have major issues on that side of the ball and can’t get a stop when they need one. Next: Idle
13. Wake Forest (2-1, 0-1 ACC; Last week: No. 15): Star RB Demond Claiborne is averaging an absurd 9.9 yards per carry as the Demon Deacons come out of their bye week. Next: vs. Georgia Tech, Saturday
14. North Carolina (2-2, 0-0 ACC; Last week: No. 12): In its two games against Power Four competition, North Carolina has been outscored 82-23 and has been outgained 908 total yards to 439. Next: Idle
15. Stanford (1-3, 1-0 ACC; Last week: No. 14): The Cardinal didn’t have enough speed in their secondary to keep up with UVa’s fast wide receivers. Next: vs. San Jose State, Saturday
16. Virginia Tech (1-3, 0-0 ACC; Last week: No. 17): After firing Brent Pry, the Hokies bounced back with a 38-6 win over FCS Wofford in interim coach Philip Montgomery’s first game. QB Kyron Drones accounted for four TDs. Next: at NC State, Saturday
17. Boston College (1-2, 0-1 ACC; Last week: No. 16): After a tough road swing at Michigan State and at Stanford, Boston College had a bye and will finally get to play again in Chestnut Hill this week. Next: vs. California, Saturday
