A week after rushing for 344 yards in a 27-26 loss to Class B’s Jamesville-DeWitt, Weedsport football’s ground game had its best performance of the season in a bounce-back win on Friday.
The Wolverines totaled a season-high 369 rushing yards on 28 touches in a 29-12 victory over Sherburne-Earlville on the road, marking the third consecutive game they have dropped at least 26 points on their opponent.
Trevor Moon paced the team in rushing for a second straight game with a season-high 266 yards and three scores on 23 carries. In the loss to the Red Rams on Sept. 26, the senior took 30 attempts for 203 yards and another three scores.
Weedsport also received a shot of adrenaline from senior Treston Williams on Friday when he scored an 80-yard touchdown on his lone carry of the matchup.
Amassing 1,114 rushing yards and 12 scores to this point, Weedsport is averaging 6.8 yards per carry. Moon leads the backfield with 706 yards and nine touchdowns on 97 carries.
On top of Moon handling a good portion of the offensive load, he’s been a key cog in the defense as well. He has a team-high 44 tackles — 22 of them coming in his past two outings.
Just behind Moon in tackles is senior Andrew Powers, who had his best defensive performance of the season in the win over the Timberwolves. He posted a game-high 17 tackles and one sack to bring his season total to 39 tackles and two sacks.
Camden Gilfus, Brandon Thomas and Alexander Seward each contributed in the turnover department to help stall Sherburne-Earlville’s offense. Gilfus and Thomas each recovered a fumble, while Seward forced the game’s one interception.
The 3-2 Wolverines will look to win back-to-back games for the first time this season on Friday when they host Class C’s Adirondack. The Wildcats are 0-5 this season while being outscored 208-49.
Player of the week: Anthony Mancuso, Auburn
The Maroons’ defense has been one of the best units in Section III, Class A this year. It has surrendered 83 points, ranking fourth out of the 12 teams.
Leading the charge in that effort is Mancuso. On Friday, he helped Auburn hold an opponent to 6 points for the third time this season by contributing a season-high 15 tackles and one sack in a 27-point victory over Corcoran.
As Auburn stands at 4-1, the senior leads the team with 55 tackles — 23 more than next-closest player — and has chipped in one sack. With three games remaining, Mancuso is just 12 tackles and one sack away from matching his junior totals.
Game of the week: Skaneateles at Cazenovia
Coming off a 36-15 loss to rival Marcellus on Oct. 3, the No. 17 state-ranked Skaneateles will hope to rebound on the road Friday with a win against Cazenovia, who is ranked No. 8 in Class C at a perfect 5-0.
Cazenovia had its own matchup with the Mustangs on Sept. 13, scoring 22 second-half points in a 40-14 win. Cazenovia has allowed just 14.9 points per game this season, which is second-best in Section III, Class D only to General Brown (2.6). Its offense has stood out just as much, averaging 36.4 points.
On the other side, Skaneateles is putting up 29.4 points a game while surrendering 25.2.
