The Water Resources Department has cleared the lush growth of water hyacinth on Kuvalai canal, which serves as a major storm water drain in Tiruverumbur taluk. The Kuvalai drain carries flood discharges from Uyyakondan canal and jungle streams such as the Upparu flowing from Manapparai region. The nearly 10 km-long drain flows into the Cauvery near Kallanai. However, the lush weed growth was blocking flow of water at various places in the drain, especially during the wet spell in the city last week, triggering calls from farmers for immediate action. The WRD deployed earth movers and labourers to clear the weed blocking the flow in the canal at different places, especially near Murugur bridge, Mykumili regulator and Poosathurai Vengur bridge. School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi inspected the works, which have since been completed, sources said.
