Weather warning issued for parts of Cambs as strong wind forecast

A yellow weather warning for wind has been placed over parts of Cambridgeshire and the rest of the UK. The weather warning will be in place from 3pm today (Saturday, September 20) until 4am on Sunday, September 21.

The Met Office issued a warning saying some inland locations might face gusts of wind of up to 50 to 60 mph. The Met Office said: “There is a chance that a short spell of very strong winds will affect parts of England and Wales on Saturday afternoon and night.”

The weather warning covers areas in Cambridgeshire, including Peterborough, Wisbech, and Huntingdon. South Cambridgeshire, including the city of Cambridge, has not been placed under the weather warning.

The Met Office has said there is a “small chance” of travel by road, rail, air, and ferry being affected with the possibility that some roads and bridges might be temporarily closed. There is also a slight chance of damage happening to buildings, including tiles being blown from roofs and a small chance of injuries from flying debris.

Some areas might also be affected by power cuts and loss of mobile phone coverage. The Met Office added: “Whilst not everywhere in the warning is expected to experience very strong winds, some inland locations may see gusts of 50-60 mph whilst gusts of 65-75 mph are possible around some coasts.

“The strongest winds are more likely around Bristol Channel and the west Wales coast on Saturday afternoon and early evening, then along the North Sea coast of east and northeast England overnight into early Sunday morning.”
