A popular leisure facility in Belfast has closed after 12 years of operations. We Are Vertigo closed its activity centre in Newtownbreda on Tuesday, citing “rising costs” and the decision to “consolidate our interests elsewhere”. The venue contained a 30,000 square foot inflatable play area, indoor ski slopes and climbing walls and was We Are Vertigo’s last site in the city after closing We Are Vertigo Titanic last year. The company has said that they are currently reviewing other opportunities for the site in Newtownbreda. In a statement, a spokesperson for We Are Vertigo said: “We’ve had 12 years of success delivering cutting-edge, world class entertainment facilities, jobs, choice and value as part of a multimillion-pound investment. “However, following a strategic review of our business which noted the prohibitive, rising costs of doing business including insurance, energy, labour costs and rates, we have taken the decision to consolidate our interests elsewhere while also reviewing exciting new opportunities for the site.” We are Vertigo is owned by businessman Gareth Murphy, who also owns the Haymarket hospitality complex in Belfast’s city centre. Last month, the bar opened three new venues on the first floor of the formerly vacant Haymarket Belfast site at 84 Royal Avenue – a cocktail lounge, sports bar and karaoke rooms. They joined The Stock Exchange, The Courtyard and The Armoury in the Royal Avenue venues’s offering.
