Wayne Rooney is due a £800,000 tax rebate from HMRC . This windfall comes after the ex- Manchester United star liquidated his image rights company. England icon Rooney has enjoyed a tumultuous time since his retirement in 2021. He began his managerial journey with Derby County and after a spell with DC United in America, he returned to helm Birmingham City in 2023 . The 40-year-old was sacked after winning twice in 15 matches and his next job would come with Plymouth Argyle . There, he would endure a similarly demanding spell and was relieved of his duties in January 2025 after earning just two points from 13 league games. Since leaving Plymouth, Rooney has turned his hand to punditry. He penned a deal with the BBC to become a regular Match of the Day studio pundit this summer and is now set for another boost to his wallet. Rooney is due to receive a substantial tax rebate after liquidating his image rights company. Three years ago, he pocketed around £21million after closing the company , of which he owned 100 per cent of the share capital. He set up image rights and investment firm Stoneygate 48 Ltd in 2006, but opted to liquidate it as it was "no longer required." Rooney chose to do this after he had retired from playing. A declaration signed by Rooney at the time reported that he was to receive an expected £20.8m payout from the closure. The last accounts were for the year ended March 31, 2020. The company's assets consisted of £1m in property, £8.9m in investments and £11.9m in monies owed to the firm, totalling £21.8m. They were offset by -liquidation costs estimated at £30k, £200k due to HMRC and £750k in other undisclosed bills. A spokesman on behalf of Stoneygate 48 Ltd said at the time: "The directors have decided to put the company into solvent -liquidation as it is no longer required. All debts will be paid in full and money will be returned to shareholders." But before this process is completed, Rooney is now set for another £800k increase thanks to a tax rebate from HMRC. This only adds to his already astronomical net worth. Rooney's current fortune stands at an estimated £170m. This would make him the world's wealthiest manager and has been bolstered over the years by his various business ventures. During his playing days, it was estimated that Rooney earned upwards of £300k per week. In addition to a lucrative salary, he also penned brand deals with the likes of Nike, Coca-Cola and EA Sports. His most recent boost came via his BBC contract. It is thought this two-year deal is worth a total of £800k. Although it may complicate any return to management, speaking last month Rooney was honest and admitted that as of now he is comfortable in punditry. "No, not really," Rooney told talkSPORT when asked if he was in search of another coaching role. "I'm happy with what I'm doing. I'm still learning in the punditry world and trying to get better at that. "I get to see my kids play more instead of the pressures of management. If the right one comes up, after what's happened in my previous jobs, I doubt it. I'm not stupid. I can be honest about that. I'm happy doing what I'm doing."
