Water is safe to drink again in Fredonia

Two days after the latest boil-water order was issued for Fredonia water customers, the Chautauqua County Department of Health reported Sunday that it’s safe to take it straight from the faucets again.
According to the report, two days of testing showed that the water in the distribution system now is suitable for drinking, cooking and all other uses.

“All plumbing lines that have not been used regularly since the boil-water order went into effect should be flushed before water from that line is consumed,” health officials cautioned. “This includes ice makers and refrigerator water dispensers.”
The village learned Friday that tests turned up high bacteria levels, one containing E. coli, in samples taken from the distribution system.
This was the seventh time in less than three years that a boil-water order has been issued for the trouble-plagued Fredonia water system, which serves customers in the Town of Pomfret as well as the village. The last order was given in July, when there were high turbidity levels at the water treatment plant.
