Watch as residents of Sanguli Community hang phones on a mango tree before making calls

Residents of the Sanguli community in the Saboba District of the Northern Region have resorted to hanging their mobile phones on a mango tree to access mobile network signals. A viral video shared by a concerned citizen has sparked attention and calls for immediate action from telecommunication companies and authorities. In the video, several mobile phones can be seen dangling from long ropes tied to the branches of a mango tree. The resident filming the scene remarks humorously, “What you see here, even though we are under a mango tree, these are not mangoes hanging. They are mobile phones. Why hang mobile phones like this? It’s very simple, there’s no network.” According to the residents, the community has been struggling with unreliable mobile connectivity for years. The spot beneath the mango tree has become the only place where they can sometimes get a faint signal strong enough to make a phone call or browse the internet. A resident who spoke in the video, expressed how the situation affects education and daily life. To download something as small as five megabytes can take over an hour. We really need help.” He explained that residents use ropes to hoist their phones high up the tree to get a better signal. Shorter individuals have to stand on makeshift supports to reach their hanging phones during calls, eliminating any sense of privacy. The concerned citizen who filmed the video made a passionate appeal to telecommunication companies, including MTN, Vodafone, Telecel, AirtelTigo and Glo, to extend reliable network coverage to the Sanguli community and surrounding areas. “Any network that improves connectivity here will gain a lot of customers because everyone will switch to them,” he noted.
