The Shats Domino Group, an informal WhatsApp group of friends who have gathered for years every Monday in Cherry Gardens, St Andrew to play dominoes, debate and discuss local and global issues, has pooled resources to support Jamaica’s Hurricane Melissa recovery. “It just dawned on us that maybe we can do something, maybe we can be more than a group of guys who sit down and play dominoes and debate non-stop and out of this we started a fundraiser and it has been wonderful,” explained Carlton Hume, the club’s president. So far, the group of business owners and long-time friends has raised over $2.75 million to be donated to American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ). “We like the work that they do and they work across Jamaica,” he said. According to club member Dwight Moore, giving back has always been a topic of discussion among the diverse group. He said AFJ has committed to matching the donation. Executive Director of the AFJ, Caron Chung, who was present at Monday’s meeting to receive the cheque of $2.75 million, shared, “When I think about the fact that this group and these gentlemen have taken it up on themselves to pool together and make donations towards Hurricane Melissa relief it is really incredible and I’m really truly grateful for their generosity.” Tags: American Friends of Jamaica Dominoes Hurricane Melissa relief effort {"jamaica-observer":"Jamaica Observer"} 0 Comments · Make a comment ALSO ON JAMAICA OBSERVER Latest News UPDATE: Investigation launched into Rio Cobre drowning incident, victim identified November 12, 2025 ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — The Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau (IPROB) and the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom... {"jamaica-observer":"Jamaica Observer"} Latest News WATCH: Man drowns after falling from police vehicle into Rio Cobre November 12, 2025 ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — A man drowned on Wednesday afternoon after reportedly falling from the back of a Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) pickup into ... {"jamaica-observer":"Jamaica Observer"} Latest News, News Buju Banton alleges relief items stolen at port November 12, 2025 KINGSTON, Jamaica — Reggae superstar Buju Banton is among several people complaining that containers filled with relief items for those affected by Hu... {"jamaica-observer":"Jamaica Observer"} Latest News OUR launches interactive map and webpage to track post-hurricane utility restoration November 12, 2025 KINGSTON, Jamaica —The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) has unveiled a new Hurricane Melissa Restoration webpage, featuring an interactive utiliti... {"jamaica-observer":"Jamaica Observer"} Entertainment, Latest News Gold in Canada for Bruno Mars and Damian Marley’s ‘Liquor Store Blues’ KEVIN JACKSON, Observer writer November 12, 2025 Fifteen years after its release, Liquor Store Blues , a reggae track with dub influences, recorded by American singer Bruno Mars and featuring Damian ... {"jamaica-observer":"Jamaica Observer"} Latest News, News JP Farms reports wipeout of banana and plantain fields November 12, 2025 ST MARY, Jamaica —JP Farms has reported significant damage to its St Mary farms following the powerful winds associated with the passage of Hurricane ... {"jamaica-observer":"Jamaica Observer"} Latest News JFF launches hurricane relief effort November 12, 2025 KINGSTON, Jamaica— The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) has kicked off its Hurricane Melissa Relief Response by delivering care packages and essentia... {"jamaica-observer":"Jamaica Observer"} HOUSE RULES We welcome reader comments on the top stories of the day.
