Warriors to Sign Multiple Veterans as Kuminga Saga Winds Down

Warriors to Sign Multiple Veterans as Kuminga Saga Winds Down

The Golden State Warriors have spent most of the summer on pause. Every move — from free-agent signings to roster construction — has been delayed by the ongoing standoff with Jonathan Kuminga. With the 22-year-old forward’s contract situation finally nearing resolution, Golden State is preparing to act quickly and fill out its roster ahead of training camp.
Warriors Ready to Add Four Veterans
According to Marc Stein, league expectation is that Golden State will sign Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, Gary Payton II, and Seth Curry once Kuminga’s deal is finalized. Stein also noted that second-round pick Will Richard and Kuminga himself are expected to round out the open roster spots.
The Warriors have carried just nine players through the summer. That lack of depth has underscored how important resolving the Kuminga negotiations has become. If these signings go through as expected, Golden State will enter camp with a full and balanced roster.
What the Veterans Bring the Warriors
Horford, 39, comes with championship experience after helping Boston to a title in 2024. His shooting (36% from deep last season) and poise give Golden State another veteran big who can stretch the floor and organize lineups when Stephen Curry rests.
Melton is still just 27. He’s more of a buy-low flier. He had a short stint with the Warriors last season before he partially tore his ACL and was dealt to the Brooklyn Nets. At full health, his mix of perimeter defense and spot-up shooting is exactly what the Warriors need in their guard rotation.
Payton II’s return would be the most emotional. He’s a fan favorite. His ball pressure, cutting, and chemistry with Golden State’s stars always give lineups a jolt. His offense can be streaky. But the defensive tone he sets is undeniable.
And then there’s Seth Curry. His career has taken him through several stops. Last year he shot 45.6% from three. That shows he’s still a high-end specialist. In Golden State’s system, with his brother alongside him, the fit could unlock more consistency. It might even bring out more confidence than he’s had in years.
The Bottom Line
The Warriors are expected to move quickly once Kuminga’s contract is finalized, with Stein pointing to next week as the window for deals to be completed. For a franchise that has sat in limbo all summer, the timing matters. Training camp is right around the corner, and Golden State’s veterans could soon be in place.
