Warriors’ Steve Kerr: Not concerned about Jonathan Kuminga becoming distraction

Warriors coach Steve Kerr isn’t worried that Jonathan Kuminga’s new contract situation will cause any issues in the locker room.

Kuminga signed a two-year deal with a team option that keeps him trade-eligible in mid-January, which means speculation about his future will likely continue.

But Kerr said that he spoke with Kuminga “quite a bit” over the summer and doesn’t anticipate any problems.

“I’ve known JK for four years now,” Kerr said, via The Athletic’s Nick Freidell. “He’s not that guy to come in and tear a team down.”

Negotiations between Kuminga’s camp and Golden State were described as contentious, but Kerr made it clear he has no issue with the 21-year-old forward pushing for the best deal possible.

“It’s just the business we’re in,” Kerr told reporters. “I never begrudge any player for trying to get the best contract that he can. … These are short careers, and I want all our players to do well. How it gets there sometimes can be messy. I’m not worried about any of that.”
