Warriors Star Gets Honest on His Retirement Timeline

Golden State Warriors future Hall of Famer Draymond Green spoke candidly on his retirement timeline to The Athletic's Sam Amick about when his illustrious career may come to an end. Green thought that his career may be coming to an end sooner rather than later in recent years, but has a new view of things and a better feeling physically as he begins year No. 14. "“If you asked me this a year ago, I would have told you (that I'd play) a year or two (more),” Green said. “But my body feels better and better every year. I’ve learned more about my body and what I need to do. I still enjoy competing at the highest level. I still enjoy setting this goal and then going through the process and trying to reach it. So I wouldn’t necessarily say (he’ll only play) a year or two, like I would have said a year ago. I don’t really put a number on it, either. Like I’ve always said, the game will tell me when it’s time to go.” Though leaving things open-ended, Green was asked just how many more seasons he has in him. Rather than leaving it up to how he feels physically, he cited just how much joy he gets from his profession after a decade-and-a-half. "I don’t know what that exact number is, but I do know I still enjoy a lot of what comes with this," Green said. "And as long as I enjoy it, and can go through that process and give what I need to give to be at an elite level, I don’t foresee a reason to tie my shoe strings together and throw them over the telephone rope yet. I still enjoy too much of it. And I’m healthy. So you add the enjoyment with the health, and those two things can make it a little tougher (to walk away). "I’m in a space where I can fully look at this through one lens, and that’s ‘How is the basketball?’ That’s the grind of it, what I’m giving, the competition on a nightly basis. Going out there, how do I feel mentally and physically? All of that stuff is still very much intact. So that’s the only lens I need to look through right now." Green already has a Hall of Fame resume. A four-time All-Star, four-time champion and 10-time All-Defensive Teamer, the 6-foot-6 Michigan State product has emerged as one of the great big men of the modern era.
