Warning for UK households buying fish and chips in November

A warning has been issued for UK households buying fish and chips in November - as the price skyrockets . With November now just days away, the price of a chip shop tea has hit a record high of £15. An analysis by BusinessComparison shows the average cost of sausage and chips has increased by around 120 per cent since 2014. Cod and chips, meanwhile, has more than doubled in price, jumping from around £4.50 in 2014 to over £9.50 in 2025. In 2014 a "regular" fish and chips cost as little as £6.70 in West Yorkshire, while prices could reach a whopping £22.50 in London. But behind every portion lies spiralling costs, driven particularly by energy bills, which are pushing prices higher and making it harder for small operators to survive." Mr Brennan said: "Don’t accept inflated bills. Switching providers can be a simple, practical step to cut costs at a time when every saving matters.” Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) said: “Whilst we have seen increases in the sale price of fish and chips, with energy costs playing a big part, it still represents great value for money compared with other food on the go options. "Our members work hard to offer a range of portion size and alternative species to give consumers more options to suit every pocket.” Andrew Crook, the owner of Skippers of Euxton, a fish and chip shop near Chorley in Lancashire, reckons the UK’s fish and chip industry is facing its biggest challenge in its 160-year history. Each week several fish and chip shops among his 1,200-strong membership are going out of business, Crook says. “This week one down the road from me closed. It opened four years ago and they’ve decided enough’s enough. With Covid and then this, it’s just too much,” Crook said. “Some which closed, the cheaper ones, just couldn’t show the price increase; quite a few that were coming up to retirement have just given up.”
