Another movie will be filming in Buffalo this month, but this one won’t be filled with holiday cheer.
Warner Bros. is ready to start filming the major horror film “T.R.O.L.L.” in the Buffalo area next week. Pre-production has been underway locally for weeks with filming scheduled Oct. 6 through Nov. 21. Locations are expected to include Buffalo, Hamburg and Eden.
Scenes will be filmed at the Water Valley train bridge on the Buffalo Southern rail line with the use of a Buffalo Southern locomotive, the Hamburg Sun reported. The Hamburg Village Board approved a facility use agreement for the expansive Legion Field parking lot to be used from 2 p.m. Oct. 16 through 9 a.m. Oct. 18 for the production trucks, trailers and other facilities, said Hamburg Mayor Thomas Tallman.
“I know they are coming for a few days. It will be an exciting thing for our community,” Tallman said, adding he hopes this will be the start of more film production in the village. “We’ve got plenty of locations, a nice downtown area and lots of events that could entice filmmakers.”

Casting calls have gone out for “T.R.O.L.L.” (working title) for background extras, stand-ins, day players and photo doubles from children as young as 7 to middle-aged farmers and “ladies of the night.” Applicants were told they needed a “1970s appearance” which matches the time period for a call seeking cars and trucks from 1959-1976 with “no modern upgrades or modifications.”
While it has been a busy year for local moviemaking, including the production of up to 10 holiday movies, this is by far the largest scale movie made here in several years.
Bradley Cooper and Rooney Mara will begin filming scenes in Buffalo this
Guillermo del Toro brought stars Bradley Cooper and Rooney Mara here for a few days of shooting in early 2020 for his Oscar-nominated “Nightmare Alley” when he famously had to truck in his own snow. Buffalo stood in for New York City when “The First Purge” was made here in the fall of 2017 on a budget of $13 million. “A Quiet Place Part II,” which had a budget of $61 million, spent the summer of 2019 making good use of our industrial landscape to visualize its post-apocalyptic story. A majority of “Marshall” ($12 million budget) was filmed here in early summer of 2016 utilizing our 1930s architecture with stars including the late Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad and Kate Hudson.
This year started with the making of another horror movie, “The Yeti,” in February starring Buffalo native William Sadler, plus Brittany Allen and Corbin Bernsen. “Circles,” a sequel to the 2015 cult indie horror film that found success on Netflix, was made here by Dutch director Niels Bourgonje in June. Michael Mailer, director of the 2024 Buffalo-made “Cutman” starring William Fichtner, returned to make “Little Audrey” in late summer with a cast including Emily Van Camp, Josh Bowman and Aidan Quinn.
Buffalo’s reputation continues to grow as a holiday moviemaking hub. It started in February with the filming of Fred Olen Ray’s “A Christmas Tail,” followed by two movies from Hallmark (“Holiday Touchdown: A Bills Love Story” and “A Newport Christmas”) and a slate of seven produced by Great American Media including two that will be made in October.
