Wanderers eye top spot

Mighty Wanderers have a chance to go top of the TNM Super League if they beat Songwe United at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre this afternoon. The Nomads step onto the artificial turf of Kamuzu Stadium with a spring in their step following a 3-0 hammering of rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets on Sunday. Wanderers President Thom Mpinganjira has since motivated the team after giving it K20 million as a reward for beating Bullets. A win in this afternoon’s match will see Wanderers dislodging Bullets at the summit of the 16-member log table. Addi t ional ly, they will open a two-point gap between themselves and Bullets in the title race. Currently, Wanderers are second on the log table with 48 points from 20 matches, one point behind leaders Bullets. Songwe, on the other hand, will be looking to cause a big upset in domestic football. Straight from their 1-0 loss to Mighty Tigers at the same venue, Songwe have another tough assignment to keep their survival hopes alive. Having collected five points only from their 21 matches in the league, the odds are stacked against them ahead of the match. Songwe registered their first win when they narrowly beat Chitipa United 1-0 a fortnight ago. In the first round, Wanderers defeated Songwe 2-0 at Karonga Stadium. But Wanderers coach Bob Mpinganjira said he had warned his charges not to underestimate Songwe. “The league is still on; we need to win some more matches to win the title,” Mpinganjira said. Mpinganjira is likely to make some changes to the side that defeated Bullets in the Blantyre derby. Sama Thierry Tanjong, Clement Nyondo and Promise Kamwendo are likely to be thrown into the fray this afternoon. Songwe coach Edwin Kaonga said his charges could upset Wanderers. “We have courage that we can get all the points against Wanderers. We will make life difficult for them,” Kaonga said. Meanwhile, Kamuzu Barracks will host Mzuzu City Hammers at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe this afternoon. The KB soldiers are on position nine on the log table with 26 points whereas Hammers are stuck in the relegation
