As part of Registered Environmental Health Specialist Week, Wake County is highlighting the work of Jennifer Edwards, an Environmental Consultant in the Public Health Plan Review and Recreational Sanitation Section. Since 2008, Edwards has been responsible for reviewing construction plans for facilities such as restaurants and pools to ensure they meet North Carolina health regulations. She also issues the final operating permits required for these establishments to open.
Edwards’ role involves coordination with multiple stakeholders, including planning departments throughout the county. “One of the most important relationships we maintain in Plan Review is with the municipalities across Wake County and their planning departments,” she stated in a release shared by Wake County. She noted that collaboration is essential, as public health regulations can introduce requirements that may not be addressed through standard planning procedures. Balancing these professional perspectives is a regular part of her responsibilities.
Before transitioning to a career in environmental health, Edwards worked in a variety of fields, including acute care hospitals, mall management, marketing, and advertising. In an interview with Wake County, Edwards remarked, “They say most people change their careers seven times during their lifetime. I think I’ve met that criteria! But this is the job that suits me best.” Outside of work, she enjoys baking, crocheting, hiking, and traveling, often collecting Christmas ornaments from the places she visits.
During the week dedicated to recognizing environmental health professionals, Jennifer Edwards is highlighted for her work in supporting public health and environmental safety in Wake County.
