WA news LIVE: Indian Ocean Drive near-miss leads to international driver being charged

WA’s Road Safety minister Reece Whitby says drivers need to do their part after an international driver was charged over a close call on the notorious Indian Ocean Drive, narrowly avoiding a head on collision.

Dashcam vision shows a driver attempting to overtake a car and a truck just before a blind bend, the two cars coming the other way forced off the road. The latest incident, which occurred on October 1, has prompted one regional shire to call for an education campaign for those visiting from overseas.

“Any international driver that comes across something like that, they think they can just overtake it anytime, and don’t understand the double lined system,” Shire of Gingin president Linda Balcombe told 9 News Perth.

The shire wants other local governments to join their advocacy efforts.

A 28-year-old man, who is an international visitor to WA, has been charged with one count of dangerous driving.
